Jacory Harris went 22-for-43 with 330 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for the Hurricanes (6-2, 3-2 ACC), who bounced back from last week's 40-37 overtime loss to Clemson. Aldarius Johnson and Tervaris Johnson each caught a score while Damien Berry had a rushing touchdown.
"Anytime you come off a loss, everybody's lethargic a little bit," said Miami coach Randy Shannon. "But you know, it's a road game - it's a tough road game - and it's our first time being on this field... Let's be honest, it's the first time we've won a game at three o'clock. So now we're one for two at three o'clock. And that was huge for us for psychological reasons because we've been playing so much at night."
Riley Skinner went 29-for-43 with 349 yards, two touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and an interception for the Demon Deacons (4-5, 2-3), who have dropped their past three games. Chris Givens and Tommy Bohanon each caught a score in the win.
"We've had a bunch of these this year," said Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe about the close loss. "This has been a pretty resilient football team. We had a lot of heartbreaks this year, a lot of close losses, and this is another one. This is one where we played pretty good football for four quarters, we just got beat by a really good football team."
Trailing by 13 points early in the fourth quarter, Miami caught a break as it recovered a fumble on a punt return deep in Wake Forest territory. Devon Brown lost the ball, which Sam Shields recovered at the two-yard line. On the next play, Harris rolled out to the right and hit Tervaris Johnson in the back of the end zone to make it a 27-21 game with 11:47 to play.
Skinner was picked off on the next drive as a tipped ball was pulled down by DeMarcus Van Dyke, but the Wake Forest defense held Miami to a three-and-out.
Wake Forest failed to score on its next possession, but consumed 5:23 of the clock and Miami got the ball back at its own 18 with 2:40 to play.
Facing a 3rd-and-10, Harris lofted a deep pass that Thearon Collier came down with for a 29-yard catch. After a sack and two incompletions, Miami faced a 4th-and-16 and Aldarius Johnson made a 29-yard catch. Benjamin followed with a 17-yard grab to get the ball to the Wake Forest 30. Two plays later, Harris sent the ball to the left side, where Benjamin made a diving catch at the end zone for a 28-27 lead with 1:08 left.
Wake Forest moved the ball, but with just four seconds left had to attempt a 60-yard field goal, and Jimmy Newman's kick went well wide and short as Miami held on for the win.
After stopping Miami on the first possession of the game, Wake Forest had a 1st-and-goal at the six-yard line, but were stopped and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal from Newman with 9:16 to play in the first.
The Hurricanes again punted and the Demon Deacons added to their lead. An eight-play drive was capped on a three-yard pass from Skinner to Bohanon for a 10-0 lead with 2:23 left in the first.
Miami's offensive woes continued on its following drive and Wake Forest got the ball back late in the first quarter. The 10-play drive covered 80 yards and spanned into the second quarter. Brandon Pendergrass had carries of 12 and 11 yards to highlight the drive, and Skinner ended it with a seven-yard keeper into the end zone for a 17-0 advantage.
The Hurricanes finally got their offense on track on their next touch as Harris and Aldarius Johnson connected for a 35-yard score to make it a 17-7 game with 9:08 to play in the first half.
The score remained that way for the next several minutes, but the Demon Deacons tacked on a 42-yarder from Newman with 42 seconds left.
Miami, though, quickly moved into scoring position on its ensuing drive thanks to a 29-yard catch by Collier. Then, coming out of a timeout with a 1st-and- goal, Berry ran around the right side into the end zone on a three-yard score to make it a 20-14 game going into the break.
Wake Forest started the final 30 minutes with the ball, but Givens fumbled a reception and Miami recovered.
However, the Hurricanes went three-and-out and each team again punted before Wake Forest padded its lead.
Starting with the ball at its own 23, Wake Forest had incompletions on the first two plays and a delay of game brought a 3rd-and-15. But Skinner moved the chains by connecting with Brown for 15 yards, and later, with the ball at the Miami 44, Skinner avoided the blitz and threw a quick pass over the middle for Givens, who made the catch and raced into the end zone for a 27-14 lead with 5:38 to play in the third.
Harris was intercepted by Dominique Tate on the ensuing drive, but the Miami defense held Wake Forest to a three-and-out.
