Robinson's late TD run helps Wolverines survive against Indiana
Bloomington, IN (Sports Network) - Denard Robinson hit Junior Hemingway on a 42-yard pass with 21 seconds left and took it in himself for the game-winning four-yard score on the next play, as 19th-ranked Michigan got by Indiana, 42-35, in a shootout at Memorial Stadium in the Big Ten opener for both programs.Robinson racked up 494 yards of offense and accounted for five touchdowns. He re-injured the left knee that kept him out of the final three quarters in last weekend's 65-21 home blowout of Bowling Green, but only missed a handful of plays in the third quarter.
The sophomore then directed the Wolverines 73 yards on five plays for the go- ahead score after Indiana tied it up with 1:15 left to play.
The big-play threat threw a 70-yard TD pass to Hemingway and ran for a 72-yard score in addition to a 32-yard scoring strike to Roy Roundtree to significantly pad his Heisman Trophy credentials.
Robinson ended 10-of-16 passing for 277 yards and ran for 217 yards and two scores for the Wolverines (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten), who had 574 total yards of offense.
Robinson logged his fifth straight 100-yard rushing game and became the first player in FBS history to have two games with 200 yards passing and rushing. His three TD passes were a career best.
Indiana senior Ben Chappell set school records for passing yards (480), completions (45) and attempts (64) with three touchdowns and an interception for Indiana (3-1, 0-1), which hasn't beaten Michigan since 1987 and was searching for its first 4-0 start in 20 years.
Darius Willis rushed for 58 yards and a pair of scores and added a touchdown and 53 yards on seven receptions. Tandon Doss caught 15 passes, one off the school record, for 221 yards and totaled 364 yards from scrimmage with 111 yards on five kick returns. The Hoosiers totaled 568 yards of offense.
The high-powered offenses took little time in establishing a back-and-forth game, as both sides scored on their respective first drives.
The Hoosiers started with the ball and drove 77 yards in 11 plays, with Chappell tossing a five-yard touchdown to Duwyce Wilson on third down.
Robinson's explosive 72-yard TD run on Michigan's second play from scrimmage tied things up, and a 32-yard strike from Robinson to Roundtree on the next series forged a 14-7 lead heading to the second quarter.
Indiana embarked on an impressive 99-yard scoring drive in the closing minutes of the opening quarter. Chappell picked up two yards on 3rd-and-1 from the Michigan 24 and Willis ran it in on the 13th play of the series for a 22-yard score, tying the game at 14-14 with 11:30 left until halftime.
Chappell's one interception was a costly one and came on the following Hoosier possession after a Michigan punt. The senior moved the offense to the Wolverines' 15-yard line before his second-down pass was picked off at the goal line.
Michigan took it 81 yards the other way, and Robinson hit Kevin Koger for a three-yard touchdown on third down to go in front 21-14 with 2:43 still on the clock.
Chappell needed every second of that to take Indiana back to the end zone for a tying score. An early conversion on 3rd-and-1 saw Damarlo Belcher reel in a seven-yard pass and Chappell completed passes of 17, 24 and 13 yards to reach the two-yard line.
It took three plays from there, as head coach Bill Lynch elected to go for six with one second left, and Belcher made a diving catch for the two-yard score and a 21-21 affair at the break.
"That was a great football game. I'm really disappointed for our kids. I thought they had great effort and kept battling the whole time. Big plays today, on their part, won out," Lynch said.
The Wolverines came out firing in the second half, as Robinson aired it out on the second play for a 70-yard touchdown to Hemingway. Robinson was tended to on the field and eventually removed after falling hard on his balky knee during the next series.
Michigan punted and Indiana went on a quick scoring drive -- buoyed by a 46- yard Doss catch -- and Willis found the end zone from four yards out with just under seven minutes to go in the third.
The Wolverines answered in short order on Vincent Smith's 56-yard TD run 45 seconds later to move back on top, 35-28.
"Any Big Ten road win is a good win. We still have to know that we have to play a lot better. But we made the plays when we had to and got the win," said Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez. "They controlled the game with their offense, which is something that worried us coming in here. We had a couple really quick scoring drives offensively so that leads to a little bit skewed (stats)."
Things slowed down on the offensive side of things from there, as Michigan punted on its next three turns with the ball and the Wolverine defense forced the Hoosiers to turn it over on downs twice.
Indiana re-grouped for a final 13-play drive spanning 80 yards with 7:12 left to play and took all but 1:15 from the clock in pulling even for the fifth time in the game, at 35-35.
Chappell was faced with a 4th-and-5 from the Michigan 35 and hit Doss over the middle for an 11-yard gain. A second 4th-and-5 play from the 19 netted six points as Chappell found Willis on a short pass into the left flat, and the sophomore tailback scampered down the left sideline and into the end zone.
Robinson called his own number on three straight plays before the big gain to Hemingway, then snuck through the middle of the line for the go-ahead score with 17 seconds remaining.
The Hoosiers had time for only two plays, the second a deep jump-ball outside the end zone that fell incomplete.

Michigan is 17-2 in Bloomington against the Hoosiers (16-1 at Memorial Stadium) and has won 17 straight in the series. The Wolverines' only loss in the last 33 matchups was a 14-10 setback in 1987...Michigan leads the overall series, 52-9, and notched a thrilling 36-33 victory in Ann Arbor last season...Michigan has claimed an astounding 41 victories in its last 43 Big Ten openers...Chappell's 480 yards passing was the most ever by an opponent against the Wolverines, surpassing Sandy Schwab's 436-yard game for Northwestern on Oct. 23, 1982...The Hoosiers had started 3-0 for back-to-back years for the first time since the 1993-94 campaigns...Hemingway totaled 129 yards on just three receptions, while Roundtree gained 126 yards on five grabs. It was his second straight 100-yard receiving game...Smith had a season-high 80 yards on nine carries for UM...Belcher had 10 catches for 91 yards for Indiana.
