The favorite has failed to cover every contest since 2005. Not only that, but the underdog has picked up the outright victory in each of those five games. Furthermore, the margin of deficit has been greater than four points just once over the last five meetings while the home team has lost every year since 2006.
Given all those facts, the only way to bet this season's matchup is to take Florida State and the points.
Miami was a five-point underdog in last year's game and prevailed, 38-34.
However, Florida State led by three points with a little less than two minutes to go before the Hurricanes took the lead on Graig Cooper's 3-yard touchdown run. Still, the Seminoles had a chance to go right back on top in the final 30 seconds, but Christian Ponder threw three incomplete passes from Miami's 2-yard line and the road team picked up another upset victory.
Both teams come into this year's contest with a non-conference loss to two of the top clubs in the nation. Miami lost the turnover battle by a 4-0 count at Ohio State in its 12-point loss to the Buckeyes while Florida State was abused by Oklahoma, 47-17.
Since those matchups in Week 2, the Hurricanes won a pair of road games at Pittsburgh and Clemson. The Seminoles garnered three straight victories, outscoring BYU, Wake Forest and Virginia by a combined 99-24 count.
The two teams are ranked 1-2 nationally in sacks with a combined 42 for almost 275 yards. Florida State is averaging five takedowns per game and Miami stands at 4.25. The next highest squad is Arkansas all the way back at 3.75. Both clubs also rank first and second nationally in tackles for loss.
On the other line of scrimmage, the Seminoles have allowed over two sacks per game while the Hurricanes have given up only six in four games. The reason for the Seminoles' high number is due to the loss of Andrew Datko. The All-ACC third-team left tackle has not started the last three weeks due to an injured shoulder. However, he has practiced all week and should be back in the lineup against Miami.
This will be another in a long line of exciting finishes in this series, and anytime you can find an underdog that's getting more than a field goal with a 50-50 chance of winning the game outright, head to the windows with both fists.
Take Florida State plus the points.
THREE MORE THREE-STAR SELECTIONS
Two Mid-American Conference teams are Three-Star plays this week as Akron heads to Kent State and Miami-Ohio travels the short distance to Cincinnati.
Kent State leads the Football Bowl Subdivision in run defense, allowing a measly 1.8 yards per carry and just 59 yards per game. Nevertheless, the Golden Flashes have won only one game and that came against Murray State. They held Miami-Ohio to 52 yards last week and the RedHawks still walked off with a six-point victory.
Coach Doug Martin's squad is an abysmal 3-9 SU at home in conference play the last three years, and 0-3 ATS in its last three when favored by two touchdowns or more.
The Zips, who are winless, are coming off one of their worst performances in recent memory, losing at home to Northern Illinois, 50-14. However, they more than held their own at Indiana two weeks back losing by only 15 points.
Running back Alex Allen has rushed for 179 yards on 27 carries in those two games, while the offense converted an amazing 11-of-23 third-down opportunities.
Akron has won five of the last six games at Kent State with a 4-2 ATS record. In addition, the Zips are 11-2 SU over the last 13 meetings.
Take Akron plus the points.
Some experts might be surprised by Miami-Ohio's 3-2 start but not yours truly. I pegged the RedHawks to win three of their first five games en route to a 5-7 campaign.
However, I had Cincinnati winning two of its initial four contests and the Bearcats have been disappointing at 1-3 and looking extremely listless in the process.
Cincinnati is averaging just 21 points per game against FBS clubs and the defense has been abused for 30 points per game. The Bearcats are 109th nationally against the pass while Miami's offensive strong suit is through the air.
Take the RedHawks plus the points.
Hawaii comes inland to take on Fresno State in an important WAC matchup. The winner will be all alone in first place at 2-0.
The Bulldogs are second nationally in pass defense, but that's based on two factors: their competition and a porous run defense.
They have faced three running quarterbacks in their first three FBS contests in Zach Collaros, Diondre Borel and Jeremiah Masoli, and, more importantly, they are 111th in the country against the run.
Hawaii has been all over the country this season, having traveled from the 50th state all the way to New York in early September. Before returning home to face Charleston Southern, the team stopped at Colorado and fell, 31-13, as the defense had no answers for the Buffaloes' attack.
However, that unit has improved in the two subsequent weeks and should fare well in this one against an offense that has a ton of injuries among its backs and receivers.
The Warriors have won three of the last four meetings at Fresno, including two years ago as three-touchdown underdogs. Look for another possible upset in 2010.
Take Hawaii plus the points.
TWO-STAR PLAYS
Go with Washington (versus Arizona State), Pittsburgh (plus the points at Notre Dame), Army (against Tulane), Mississippi State (at Houston), BYU (a home underdog to San Diego State) and FAU (at ULM).
ONE-STAR CHOICES
Take Minnesota (versus Wisconsin), Indiana (at Ohio State), Tennessee (at Georgia), Syracuse (at South Florida), Arkansas State (at North Texas) and the under in Temple-Northern Illinois.
AFTER FIVE WEEKS
Yours truly went 7-6 last week for a five-week 27-25-2 total, good for a 52- percent winning percentage. Breaking the totals down by the star system, the Five-Star plays are 2-3, the Three-Star selections are 7-4-1, the Two-Star picks are 13-12-1 and the One-Star choices are 5-6.
As a reminder, the Five-Star plays are those games in which my key selections and my "Power Numbers" match. The Three-Star choices are my personal picks, while the Two-Star plays are the "power number" picks - games with at least a five-point differential between my line and the actual line. Finally, the One- Star plays are my personal secondary selections.
