Auburn started the winning drive at its own seven-yard line following a Kentucky field goal that tied the game with 7 1/2 minutes left.
Facing a 3rd-and-6 on its first set of downs, Auburn moved the chains on a nine-yard catch from Darvin Adams. The team continued to gain first downs and eat up the clock. Cameron Newton gained a first down with four yards on a 3rd-and-4 and later moved the chains again with a four-yard run on 3rd-and-2. After calling timeout with two seconds left and the ball at the Kentucky seven, Byrum easily booted the ball between the uprights for the win.
"Obviously it's hard to win on the road in this league, and this was a battle," Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. "We said at halftime this was going to come down to the end. We're finding different ways to win every week and I can't be more proud of our football team."
Newton had 28 carries for 198 yards and four scores and went 13-for-21 for 210 yards and an interception for the Tigers (6-0, 3-0 SEC), who have won four of their games by a total of 17 points.
Randall Cobb had two scores on the ground, caught a score and threw for another for the Wildcats (3-3, 0-3), who have dropped three straight, all against SEC opponents.
Kentucky started the game with the ball and got a 36-yard kickoff return from Cobb to begin the drive in Auburn territory. Cobb capped the seven-play march with a two-yard run into the end zone for a 7-0 lead just over three minutes in.
The Tigers answered on their ensuing possession as Newton punched the ball into the end zone on a 16-yard run. The Tigers converted two third downs on the nine-play, 78-yard march.
Following a three-and-out from the Wildcats, Auburn made it a 14-7 game thanks to an eight-yard score from Newton with just over a minute to play in the first to cap a drive that covered 80 yards.
Newton's third score of the game, a five-yard run with 10:01 to play in the first half, followed three minutes later by Byrum's 38-yard field goal gave Auburn a 24-7 lead.
A six-yard touchdown catch by Jordan Aumiller from Cobb with just under five minutes to play in the half made it a 10-point game, but Auburn answered on its next touch as Newton scored for the fourth time on a three-yard scamper.
Kentucky, though, got a 29-yard field goal from Craig McIntosh on the final play before the break to make it a 31-17 game.
The Wildcats scored twice in the third quarter to tie the game.
On their second touch of the half, Kentucky took the ball 48 yards in seven plays with Mike Hartline tossing a 16-yard score to Cobb to make it a 31-24 contest with a bit over eight minutes left in the frame.
"It's hard. You can't really say much about it. We ran out of time and just came up one drive short," Hartline said.
Auburn was held to a three-and-out on its next touch and Kentucky got the ball back at its own 43. On a 2nd-and-6 at the Auburn 27, Cobb took the ball 26 yards and on the next play punched it into the end zone to tie the game with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.
Auburn went back on top on its next touch as Byrum booted a 19-yard field goal early in the fourth, but Kentucky responded in kind with a 35-yarder from McIntosh with 7 1/2 minutes left.
