Ohio State takes over top spot in poll

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Ohio State is the new top-ranked team in the nation, according to the latest Associated Press poll.

After Alabama's loss at South Carolina on Saturday, Ohio State moved up one spot and replaced the Crimson Tide at the top, but not by an overly decisive margin.

The Buckeyes (6-0) received 34 first-place votes and a total of 1,453 points from a nationwide media panel. Oregon (6-0) also moved up one slot into second and garnered 15 first-place votes with 1,427 points.

Boise State, TCU and Nebraska round out the top five. Boise State picked up eight first-place votes, while TCU earned one.

Oklahoma, which notched two first-place votes, is sixth and followed by Auburn, Alabama, LSU and South Carolina. The defending champion Crimson Tide dropped seven spots, while South Carolina vaulted nine places from 19th.

The second 10 consists of Utah, Arkansas, Michigan State, Stanford, Iowa, Florida State, Arizona, Wisconsin, Nevada and Oklahoma State. Michigan State moved up four places from 17th after its win at Michigan and Florida State jumped seven places following its victory at Miami-Florida, while Arizona tumbled eight places after a loss to Oregon State.

Missouri, Florida, Air Force, Oregon State and West Virginia are the last five teams ranked this week. Florida dropped eight places after its second straight loss. The Gators lost to Alabama two Saturdays ago before a last-second loss at home against LSU.

Oregon State moved into the poll for a third different time this year after winning in Tucson, while West Virginia is also back in the rankings after a two-week absence.

Miami-Florida and Michigan each dropped out. The Hurricanes were 13th before the 45-17 home loss to the Seminoles, while the Wolverines were 18th prior to a 34-17 home setback to the Spartans.

Just two games next Saturday will feature ranked teams against each other. Again the SEC is at the forefront with Arkansas visiting Auburn, while a Big Ten battle pits Ohio State at Wisconsin.
