McCoy to have number retired at Texas

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will have his number officially retired by the university, it was announced Wednesday.

McCoy, a two-time Walter Camp national player of the year, Heisman Trophy finalist, 2009 Maxwell Award recipient, and current signal-caller for the Cleveland Browns, will see his No. 12 permanently honored during a ceremony prior to Texas' October 30 home game against Big 12 rival Baylor.

He will join former Longhorn greats Earl Campbell (1974-77), Bobby Layne (1944-47), Tommy Nobis (1963-65), Ricky Williams (1995-98) and Vince Young (2003-05) as the only Texas national players of the year to be so honored.

"I was just overwhelmed, humbled and psyched when I was told about this," McCoy said. "It's a dream come true.

"This is such a tremendous honor, but it's not about me. it's about all of the great coaches that helped me develop as a player and as a man, the tremendous teammates that made my job so much easier and the most supportive family anyone could ask for. I can't thank coach (Mack) Brown enough for bringing me to Texas and coach Davis and all of the staff for pushing me and helping me to improve each and every day."

As a senior, McCoy led the Longhorns to a 13-0 record and a Big 12 championship over Nebraska, but was injured during a 37-21 setback to Alabama in the BCS title contest. He finished the 2009 campaign with 332 completions for 3,521 yards and 27 touchdowns, while rushing for 348 yards and three scores.

The 24-year-old finished his college career as the winningest quarterback in NCAA FBS history, racking up an impressive 45-8 overall mark. He is the first quarterback to record four straight 10-or-more win seasons and the first in Longhorns history to win 12 games in back-to-back years.

"Having grown up in Texas and playing for my dad in high school makes this extra special," added McCoy. "Hopefully it's something every coach who helped me along the way -- from Pop Warner, Little League, junior and high school -- can be proud of and a tribute to everything coaches do in developing young players all across this great state."

McCoy, who was taken in the third round of the 2010 draft by Cleveland, holds 47 individual school records. He ended his tenure in Austin with 1,157 pass completions for 13,253 yards, 112 TDs and a 70.3 completions percentage.
