Newton gained 188 yards on the ground and finished with 140 yards on 10-of-14 passing for the Tigers (7-0, 4-0 SEC). Mario Fannin, Onterio McCalebb and Michael Dyer each ran for a touchdown in the win.
"I just feel really blessed to be around such an unbelievable group of young men, and this football team amazes me in different ways every week," said Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. "That was an extremely good football team tonight, and I guess it was another way that we found how to win a game."
Tyler Wilson completed 25-of-34 passes for 332 yards with four touchdowns and was picked off twice in relief of Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who went to the locker room after guiding the Razorbacks to a touchdown in the second quarter for a 14-10 lead. He was later diagnosed with a concussion.
Mallett was 10-of-15 for 96 yards, while Greg Childs had 164 yards and two scores on nine receptions for Arkansas (4-2, 1-2), which has dropped two of three.
Auburn and Arkansas entered play boasting the top two offenses in the conference, and it was clearly evident Saturday. The teams combined for 1,036 yards, with the Razorbacks piling up 566.
Wes Byrum booted a 26-yard field goal as the first half expired, then drilled a 28-yarder to cap the opening drive of the third quarter to give Auburn a 30-21 lead.
Wilson then orchestrated a nine-play, 87-yard drive. A roughing the passer penalty on third down prolonged the march, and the sophomore signal-caller converted a critical fourth down with a six-yard completion to D.J. Williams at the Auburn 37. Wilson then threw a touchdown pass to Ronnie Wingo Jr. on the next play to draw Arkansas within two.
McCalebb returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards before being tripped up at the one, setting up a short touchdown run by Newton.
The Razorbacks, though, answered 50 seconds later, as Joe Adams hauled in a 24-yard TD pass from Wilson with 3:20 remaining in the stanza. After Auburn went three-and-out, Wilson put Arkansas on top by hitting Childs on a slant route for a 23-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion made it 43-37 in favor of the visitors inside the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Auburn then pulled away with 28 unanswered points, capitalizing on a trio of costly turnovers. Emory Blake grabbed a 15-yard TD, Zac Etheridge returned a Broderick Green fumble 47 yards to the end zone and the Tigers converted a pair of Wilson interceptions into scoring runs of three and 38 yards by Newton and Dyer for a 65-43 advantage.
"It was a tough game for us," said Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. "You have to tip your hat off to Auburn, they played well and Cam Newton did an unbelievable job running the football. We matched them for three quarters, and I was really happy with the way our guys rallied around Tyler Wilson. They all played hard. I really thought we would find a way to win the game, but we came up short. Obviously turnovers affected us in the fourth quarter, and it was the difference in the game."
Arkansas got the ball to begin the game and was forced to punt. The Razorbacks, who had scored a touchdown on the opening drive in three straight games, drove 55 yards on their next series for the first points of the game. Green converted a 3rd-and-1 from the Auburn nine with a two-yard gain, then Mallett and Van Stumon hooked up for a touchdown on the next play.
The Tigers countered with a score of their own on the next possession. The drive went 53 yards in six plays, ending when Newton rumbled for a five-yard touchdown.
Byrum made a 43-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter to put Auburn up 10-7. Arkansas responded with a 12-play, 88-yard drive that Green capped with a one-yard plunge.
The see-saw battled continued as Auburn grabbed a 17-14 lead on Fannin's controversial four-yard TD run. It appeared Fannin fumbled before he crossed the goal line, with Arkansas' Tramain Thomas punching the ball out with his right hand. It was initially ruled a touchdown on the field and the call stood following a review.
Auburn then took over at the Arkansas 25 after a blocked punt. Three plays later, McCalebb scored on a 13-yard run and the Tigers' lead grew to 24-14.
Wilson, replacing the injured Mallett, connected with Childs on a 34-yard touchdown to trim Arkansas' deficit to three with 1:06 remaining in the quarter.
Game Notes
Auburn snapped a two-game skid against Arkansas and leads the all-time series 11-8-1. This marked the first time Auburn and Arkansas have played each other when both teams were nationally ranked...The Tigers have won 61 consecutive games when scoring 30 or more points...Knile Davis ran for 91 yards on 14 carries for the Razorbacks...This was the highest scoring game in a regulation SEC game.
