Adam Robinson ran for 143 yards and two scores for the Hawkeyes (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten), who were coming off a bye week and have won three in a row. Robinson also had four catches for 61 yards for Iowa, which built up a 28-7 lead after three quarters, but took the win only after surviving Michigan's big fourth quarter.
Tate Forcier led the comeback attempt after taking over for Denard Robinson, who left the game in the third quarter when he was shaken up on a run. Forcier passed for 239 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for a score, but was intercepted twice as the Wolverines (5-2, 1-2) lost for the second straight week.
Denard Robinson ended the game 13-of-18 passing for 96 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. He also ran for 105 yards, while Junior Hemingway caught nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown.
"Our quarterbacks made a few plays, but they were offset by our mistakes," said Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez. "We could be a really good team, especially offensively, if we eliminate the mistakes. It's the second week in a row where there was a penalty or a turnover in scoring position that we can't have. We have to clean that up."
Michigan faced a two-touchdown deficit to start the third quarter and had a chance to trim it in the middle of the frame. But after reaching the Iowa 15, Vincent Smith fumbled and Lebron Daniel recovered for the Hawkeyes. Making matters worse for Michigan, Denard Robinson left early in the drive after rushing for a 12-yard gain.
Forcier, the 2009 starter, was not initially effective, as he was picked off by Micah Hyde on Michigan's next drive.
Iowa then went 63 yards in five plays for another touchdown. On third down, Adam Robinson ran 11 yards across the goal line for a 28-7 lead with 1:50 remaining in the quarter.
But early in the fourth quarter, Forcier's passing led the Wolverines down the field on an 85-yard scoring drive. Stephen Hopkins' two-yard run capped it to get the Wolverines back within two touchdowns.
The Hawkeyes countered, getting a big advantage when a 15-yard facemask penalty was tacked on top of Adam Robinson's 20-yard run. The gains put the ball at the Michigan 25, and on 3rd-and-4 Stanzi found Johnson-Koulianos for his third touchdown reception of the afternoon.
That score came with 11:37 on the clock, and just more than a minute later Forcier led Michigan to another touchdown. He passed to Darryl Stonum for 18 yards to open the drive, and several plays later he hit an open Hemingway for a 45-yard touchdown.
After a three-and-out from Iowa, Forcier went back to work. He found Stonum for gains of 13, 11 and 11 yards to bring the ball to the Hawkeyes' 34. A 31- yard pass to Hemingway got Michigan to the three, and Forcier ran across the goal line on the next play to conclude the 73-second drive.
Suddenly, the Wolverines were within 35-28 with 6:55 still to play. But Iowa took a lot of that time off the clock with an extended drive, which reached the Michigan 11 before Mike Meyer kicked a 30-yard field goal with 2:53 left.
Forcier was intercepted by Troy Johnson to end Michigan's next possession, and Iowa ran out the clock from there.
"We're certainly thrilled to get the victory," said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. "It didn't come easy; we expected it to be a tough game and it turned out to be. That's what you expect in conference play, on the road, and playing a team that's very talented."
Michigan forced a punt on the game's opening drive, then drove 75 yards for a score. Early in the march, Denard Robinson converted a third down with an 18- yard pass to Hemingway, which brought the ball across midfield.
On the next set of downs, the Wolverines faced a 4th-and-1 at the Iowa 29 before Denard Robinson rushed for eight yards. He later found Vincent Smith for an eight-yard touchdown, putting Michigan in front.
Late in the quarter, Iowa began a drive at its own 16 after a 63-yard punt by Will Hagerup. However, the Hawkeyes reached the end zone in only nine plays. They faced just one third down during the drive, at the Michigan 14, and Stanzi converted it with a touchdown pass to Johnson-Koulianos with 1:29 on the clock.
Iowa then took control in the second quarter, thanks in part to a turnover. In the first minute, Tyler Sash picked off Denard Robinson deep in Iowa territory and ran the ball back 36 yards to midfield.
The Hawkeyes moved to the Michigan 31 before Stanzi again connected with Johnson-Koulianos for a touchdown and 14-7 lead with 13:22 to play in the half.
Michigan had a 38-yard field goal try blocked on its next possession. Sash was on the scene again, picking up the loose ball and running to the Wolverines' 48. Adam Robinson got into the end zone from four yards out with 4:31 remaining, and Iowa held the 21-7 lead at the break.
