Wynn, Utah cruise past Wyoming to stay unbeaten

Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Jordan Wynn threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns, and Eddie Wide and Reggie Dunn each ran for a score, as 11th- ranked Utah smothered Wyoming, 30-6.

Wynn completed 16-of-25 throws and was picked off three times, while Matt Asiata carried 16 times for a season-high 109 yards to lead the Utes (6-0, 3-0 Mountain West) to their third 6-0 start since 2004.

"We didn't go into the game with any plan to run him (Asiata) any more than Eddie (Wide)," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said. "He just had the hot hand and was doing a nice job, so you stick with the hot hand."

Wide ran for 57 yards on 13 carries and Brad Clifford made five catches for 63 yards as the Utes emerged victorious for the fifth time in their last seven trips to War Memorial Stadium.

Austyn Carta-Samuels connected on 8-of-12 throws for 84 yards and David Leonard hauled in three passes for 58 yards and a score for the Cowboys (2-5, 0-3), who lost for a fourth time to a ranked team this season.

Wynn found a wide-open Luke Matthews from 45 yards away on a flea-flicker to cap off a five-play, 70-yard drive that put the Utes ahead 7-0 just 3:10 into the game. It was Matthews first career touchdown on the longest reception of his career, as well.

Wyoming's only scoring threat in the first half ended in frustration. Carta- Samuels scrambled away from two potential sacks and threw a pass to the right sideline to a diving Travis Burkhalter that was initially ruled no catch but overturned by replay to go as an 18-yard gain to the Utes' 16. However, the Cowboys tried to run a double reverse and lost nine yards and were forced to settle for a field goal try.

Ian Watts missed a 48-yarder but got another shot from 10 yards closer when Utah was called for holding. But, he pushed it wide left again with less than a minute to play in the first quarter.

Joe Phillips' season-long 48-yard field goal gave the Utes a 10-0 lead with 9:12 to go in the first half.

DeVonte Christopher caught a Wynn toss on the run inside the 15, made a spin move at the five and dragged a defender into the end zone with him to give the visitors a 16-0 advantage with 2:21 left in the half after the extra point was blocked.

Utah got the ball back with 70 seconds remaining before the break and needed only three plays to add to the lead. A 12-yard pass to Christopher was followed by a 30-yard catch and run by Clifford to the Cowboys' six. Wide then dashed in from there on the next play to push the margin to 23-0 just 25 seconds later.

"We came out ready to play," said Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen. "I was disappointed in how we closed out the second quarter. We competed much better in the second half and there are some positives you can take from it. My hat goes off to Utah, they are an excellent team."

Dunn took a pitch on a reverse and scooted in from seven yards out to make it 30-0 with 1:41 left in the third.

Dax Crum led the Cowboys on their only scoring drive of the night. He connected with Leonard on a 10-yard strike to complete an eight-play, 42-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter that was aided by a 15-yard pass interference penalty. Wyoming's attempt for two was denied as Josh Biezuns was stuffed on a run.

"We knew going into this game it was going to be a challenge," Leonard said. "They have some great corners in a great secondary. We were able to make a few big plays and we will have to build on that. For us to move the ball and score a late touchdown is a positive."
