Hartline completed 32-of-42 passes for 349 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats (4-3, 1-3 SEC), who erased a 28-10 halftime deficit to snap a 10-game losing streak to South Carolina. It was Kentucky's first win in the series since October 9, 1999 when the Wildcats posted a 30-10 victory in Columbia.
"There's nothing sweeter. We finally came through. We never lost faith," Cobb said. "We never, for one second, thought we were going to lose that game. We have had struggles at times, but we found a way to win, that is what it comes down to. We kept our faith and we found a way to win."
Cobb caught eight passes for 63 yards and carried the ball eight times for 27 yards. Chris Matthews hauled in 12 passes for 177 yards and a score while La'Rod King caught four passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns for Kentucky, which beat a ranked team for the first time since the Wildcats took down No. 1 LSU, 43-37, in 2007.
Stephen Garcia connected on 20-of-32 passes for 382 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Gamecocks (4-2, 2-2 SEC), who have lost seven straight conference games on the road.
Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier came into the game with a 17-0 career record against Kentucky.
"You've got to give Kentucky credit for all the third downs they made, and they made the fourth down," Spurrier said. "They just beat us. They stuffed us offensively in the second half. Marcus (Lattimore) went out early in the third quarter. We didn't have much of a running game. But they stayed on the field most of the half and we had to punt a lot."
Freshman sensation Marcus Lattimore carried the ball 15 times for 79 yards and two scores. He also caught four passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, but sat out most of the second half with a left ankle injury for South Carolina, which upset then-top-ranked Alabama last weekend.
Trailing 28-10, Kentucky started its comeback early in the third quarter. Following a punt, the Wildcats started at their own five-yard line with 10:15 left. Kentucky converted on four third downs. Faced with a 3rd-and-4 from the five-yard line, King caught the ball in the end zone to cut the gap to 28-17 with 3:49 remaining.
After South Carolina went three-and-out, Kentucky bridged the third and fourth frames with an eight-play, 76-yard drive. On 4th-and-1 from midfield, Cobb rushed for 12 yards, and Matthews caught a 38-yard TD pass on the next play. A failed two-point conversion kept the score at 28-23 with 13:09 remaining.
After each team went three-and-out, the Gamecocks took over at their own five with 10:07 remaining. South Carolina gained just one first down before punting the ball away.
The Wildcats took over at their own 32 with 7:31 to go. Two complete passes to Matthews put the ball near midfield, and Cobb later caught a five-yard pass on third down for a fresh set of downs. On a 3rd-and-3 from the 36, Matthews caught a nine-yard pass, but the game came down to a 4th-and-7 from the 24, and Hartline found a wide-open Cobb down the right sideline for the eventual game-winning TD. A successful two-point conversion put the Wildcats in front by three, 31-28, with 1:15 left.
"Most of the game, I was being double covered. I had two men on me, but Chris (Mathews) was having an amazing game," Cobb said. "That last play, Chris (Mathews) ran a little sit route and I ran the corner and the safety and corner jumped Chris (Mathews) because he had been making plays and getting the ball all night, which left me wide open. Mike (Hartline) stood in there and took a hit and we got the touchdown."
South Carolina got to Kentucky's 20-yard line via Tori Gurley's 18-yard catch. The Gamecocks called their final timeout with 11 ticks to go, but instead of the field goal unit coming on to the field, Garcia brought the offense out and was picked off in the end zone by Mosley to end the game.
South Carolina started out hot, needing just six plays to find the end zone. Lattimore capped the 72-yard march with a 30-yard TD run. The Gamecocks put together a nine-play, 88-yard drive on their next possession, with Alshon Jeffery's three-yard touchdown catch making it 14-0 with 4:40 remaining.
Garcia was picked off Winston Guy Jr. late in the first quarter. Kentucky capitalized with an eight-play, 56-yard drive that King ended with a 10-yard TD catch to cut the gap to 14-7 with 13:10 left until half.
South Carolina fought right back with a touchdown of its own. Lattimore converted a 3rd-and-5 with a 48-yard catch, and a few plays later scampered into the end zone from 10 yards to make it a 21-7 game with 9:55 to go.
The Wildcats got to eight-yard line of the Gamecocks, but had to settle for a 26-yard Craig McIntosh field goal. On the third play of South Carolina's ensuing possession, Lattimore caught a 47-yard TD pass to give the Gamecocks a 28-10 lead with about two minutes remaining.
