Oregon takes top spot in poll for first time

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Oregon has ascended to the top of the Associated Press college football poll for the first time.

The Ducks (6-0) were idle this weekend and moved up one spot to the top of the rankings after Ohio State's loss to Wisconsin on Saturday. It marks the second straight week with a new No. 1 team, as Ohio State had supplanted Alabama last week after the Crimson Tide lost to South Carolina.

Oregon received 39 first-place votes and a total of 1,471 points from a nationwide media panel. The Ducks will play as the top-ranked team for the first time at home on Thursday against UCLA.

Boise State (6-0) also moved up one spot to second after a 48-0 rout of San Jose State, while Oklahoma (6-0) vaulted three places to third on the heels of a 52-0 thumping of Iowa State. TCU (7-0) remained fourth despite a 31-3 win over BYU and Auburn (7-0) jumped up two places to fifth after a 65-43 slugfest win over Arkansas.

The top four teams all garnered first-place votes. Boise State received 15, while Oklahoma and TCU each picked up three.

LSU, Alabama, Michigan State, Utah and Wisconsin round out this week's top 10. Michigan State moved up five places from 13th, while Wisconsin vaulted eight places following its 31-18 win over Ohio State.

The Buckeyes tumbled 10 spots to 11th this week and are followed by Stanford, Iowa, Nebraska, Arizona, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Missouri, South Carolina and West Virginia.

Nebraska and South Carolina each plummeted nine places from last week. The Huskers were fifth last week, but dropped a 20-13 decision at home against Texas, while the Gamecocks failed to follow up on their upset of Alabama and blew an 18-point lead in a 31-28 setback at Kentucky.

The last five teams ranked this week are Arkansas, Texas, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State and Miami-Florida. Arkansas dropped nine places from 12th after the shootout loss to Auburn, while the remaining four teams are all new to this week's poll.

Texas returns to the poll after a two-week absence, while Virginia Tech is also back after starting the season as the 10th-ranked team and opening the campaign with losses to Boise State and James Madison. Mississippi State is ranked for the first time this season after a 10-7 win at Florida on Saturday and Miami-Florida returns after dropping out last week.

Florida, Nevada, Oregon State and Air Force dropped out of this week's poll. The Gators have lost three in a row and are unranked for the first time in 89 weeks. Nevada was surprised in Hawaii, while Oregon State lost in double- overtime at Washington and Air Force fell at San Diego State.

Four games next week will feature matchups of ranked teams, including two from the Big 12. Oklahoma will visit Missouri in a battle of unbeatens, while Oklahoma State will host Nebraska. The SEC has its usual matchup of ranked teams as Auburn welcomes LSU and a Big Ten tussle will pit Wisconsin at Iowa.
