Minnesota fires Tim Brewster
Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The University of Minnesota has fired head football coach Tim Brewster in the wake of a 1-6 start to the 2010 season.Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Horton will take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis.
The Golden Gophers have lost six straight games after opening the season with a victory over Middle Tennessee. They are also 0-3 in the Big Ten with losses to Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue.
"While I appreciate the passion and commitment that Coach Brewster has shown, it is clear that a change in the leadership of Gopher football is necessary," said Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi in a statement. "We have high aspirations for our football program and we are not satisfied with its current direction. The results so far this season have been unacceptable and the program has simply not shown enough improvement over the past three and a half years to continue with the status quo."
Brewster signed a five-year contract in January 2007 and was given a two-year extension through the 2013 season just this past January. Maturi said Brewster will be paid the buyout clause of $600,000.
The Gophers were just 15-30 under Brewster, including a dismal 6-21 in the Big Ten. After a 1-11 campaign in his first year of 2007, Minnesota made a pair of appearances in the Insight Bowl each of the last two seasons -- losing both games.
