Rutgers DT LeGrand paralyzed from neck down

Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is paralyzed from the neck down after suffering a spinal cord injury in Saturday's game against Army.

The injury occurred when he made a tackle on a kickoff return with 5:10 to play in the game. The affected area is at the C3-C4 level of the spine and the junior had emergency surgery through the night at Hackensack University Medical Center to stabilize the spine.

He currently has no movement below his neck.

"We want to say thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, kind words, and well wishes," the LeGrand family said. "We appreciate every single thought. Eric is in good spirits and we are praying for a full recovery."

LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at the hospital where the surgery was performed and will remain there indefinitely.

"Eric, his family and the Rutgers Football family believe he will recover," said head coach Greg Schiano. "We ask our fans and the entire Rutgers community to believe and pray for Eric as he begins the recovery process."
