Oklahoma tops first BCS poll; Oregon, Boise St. close behind
Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Oklahoma Sooners took the top spot in the first Bowl Championship Series poll of the college football season on Sunday.Before a 52-0 drubbing of Iowa State on Saturday pushed its record to 6-0, Oklahoma had won its previous three games by a combined 13 points. Nevertheless, wins over perennial contenders Florida State and Texas earlier this season boosted their resume enough that the Sooners (.9215) can essentially dictate their fate from here on out.
Oregon (.8921), the new No.1 in the AP poll this week, and Boise State (.8898), which is also 6-0, are next in line at second and third, respectively, in the poll. Fellow unbeatens Auburn (.8641), TCU (.8573), LSU (.8245) and Michigan State (.7628) rank fourth through seventh.
An upset-filled Saturday, highlighted by the No.1 team in the AP poll losing for the second consecutive week, resulted in numerous shifting in the polls.
Ohio State was No.1 heading into this weekend's games, but a 31-18 pasting in Wisconsin dropped the Buckeyes (.5726) to 10th in the initial BCS poll.
Alabama (.6654), which lost two weeks ago in South Carolina as the top ranked team, is currently eighth, one in front of undefeated Utah (.6540).
The only undefeated Football Bowl Subdivision teams that remain are: Oregon, Boise State. Oklahoma, TCU, Auburn, LSU, Michigan State, Utah, Oklahoma State, and Missouri. There will be at least two fewer next week, as Oklahoma visits Missouri and Auburn welcomes LSU.
Missouri (.5491) is currently 11th in the BCS standings, while Oklahoma State (.5261) sits in the 14th spot.
The BCS system, in place since 1998, is computed by averaging the percentage totals of the Harris Interactive poll, USA Today poll and computer rankings. The top two teams will meet for the BCS national title in Glendale, Arizona on January 10, 2011.
Last season, the system pitted Alabama and Texas against one another, with the Crimson Tide rolling to a 37-21 victory.
