Dodge, who made the rare move from high school to the college Football Bowl Subdivision level, has been let go in the middle of his fourth season with the Mean Green.
The Mean Green are currently 1-6, though the team has battled injuries and used four quarterbacks. The Denton Record Chronicle, which had reported the story earlier on Wednesday, reports the team has lost 12 players to season- ending injuries.
Overall, North Texas has gone 6-37 after Dodge took the reins of the program following the 2006 season.
"After a complete evaluation of the University of North Texas football program over the last three and one-half years, I believe it is in the best interest of this university and this program to make a change in the leadership," said athletics director Rick Villarreal said. "With support from University President Lane Rawlins I have informed Coach Dodge of my decision to take the program in a new direction."
Offensive coordinator Mike Canales will take over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season, while the school will immediately begin searching for Dodge's replacement.
Prior to coming to North Texas, the 47-year-old Dodge had led Carroll High School in nearby Southlake, Texas to a 79-1 record over his final five years, including four state championships in Class 5A.
