No. 1 Oregon routs UCLA

Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Darron Thomas threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns and Heisman Trophy candidate LaMichael James ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, as top-ranked Oregon looked the part in a 60-13 thumping of UCLA.

The Ducks (7-0, 4-0 Pac-10) amassed 582 total yards -- 15 more than their season average -- five different players scored and individual highlights were the norm. Remene Alston, Jr. ran for 75 yards and three touchdowns and Jeff Maehl caught eight passes for 107 yards and a score in the victory.

The Ducks are celebrating their first No. 1 ranking in school history and improved to 7-0 for the first time since starting 8-0 in 1933.

UCLA (3-4, 1-3) totaled just 290 yards and was overmatched by Oregon's offensive speed and depth.

"Obviously the game got out of hand," said UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel. "We've got some serious work to do in rebuilding our program, getting back to where we can be a good football team, one that can compete successfully in this conference and we're going to start it as quickly as possible because obviously this isn't good enough."

Richard Brehaut threw for 159 yards on 16-of-23 passing with an interception and ran for the Bruins' lone touchdown. His counterpart Thomas completed 22-of-31 passes and found seven different receivers.

"Our receivers made some amazing catches today," Thomas said. "The key was that the offensive line did a tremendous job blocking for the running game and giving me time to make the proper reads."

The Ducks wasted little time, moving 90 yards in under two minutes for the game's first points. Thomas completed three 20-plus-yard passes and James slashed inside the tackles and found the end zone from eight yards out.

After a Bruins punt, the quick-striking Ducks moved at ease, taking out large chunks of yardage at a time. Just two of the 10 plays were passes, as Oregon used the ground game to find paydirt. Alston plunged home from a yard out and the subsequent two-point conversion opened a 15-point edge.

The Bruins tried to move the football and kill the clock, finding their first points on Kai Forbath's 25-yard chip shot. UCLA kept the football on the ground for the march's final 10 plays.

Undeterred, the Ducks navigated 55 yards in 27 seconds to pile on. James gashed the defense for 27 yards and Thomas finished the series with a 22-yard scoring strike to Josh Huff.

Oregon went on a lengthy march, relative to its quicker first-half scoring strikes, to widen the gap. An 11-play, 85-yard drive was capped by Thomas' six-yard TD pass to David Paulson.

A 29-yard field goal by Rob Beard ended the first-half scoring and gave the homestanding Ducks a 32-3 advantage.

The Ducks started the second half like they ended the first 24 minutes, adding to their advantage. A mix of runs and passes resulted in an 11-play, 67-yard TD drive capped by Thomas' three-yard toss to Maehl.

UCLA added three more points to the scoreboard with Forbath's 48-yard field goal, but the Ducks defense used a sack and fumble to put its offense in prime scoring position several minutes later. James slipped to paydirt from six yards away on the possession's first play for a 46-6 edge.

Alston's 42-yard run set up his own two-yard plunge for a 53-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Another two-yard run by Alston gave the Ducks a 60-6 lead and Brehaut's six-yard rush off left tackle finally got the Bruins into the end zone in the closing minutes.

Game Notes

UCLA still leads the all-time series, 39-25, but Oregon has won eight of the last 10 meetings...Oregon has a 19-3 mark in conference play since the start of the 2008 season..Oregon came into the game averaging a nation-best 54.3 points per game..the Ducks have won 14 straight home games.
