Robinson, Arnaud guide Cyclones to first win over Texas

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Alexander Robinson rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries as Iowa State posted its first-ever victory over 22nd-ranked Texas, taking a 28-21 decision at Memorial Stadium.

Austen Arnaud threw for a pair of scores despite completing only 11-of-23 passes with an interception for the Cyclones (4-4, 2-2 Big 12), who rebounded in impressive fashion from a 52-0 pasting at Oklahoma last Saturday.

Darius Reynolds and Josh Lenz each caught a touchdown pass for Iowa State, which beat its conference rival for the first time in eight tries.

"I am very humbled to be sitting here coaching this program on a day of a historic game for Iowa State," Cyclones head coach Paul Rhoads said. "We came to play today. We were focused, resilient and we executed better. We fought for 60 minutes and executed our assignments. The difference between this game and Oklahoma is that we had early success. With that early success, we built confidence."

Garrett Gilbert was 34-of-57 for 344 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted three times for the Longhorns (4-3, 2-2), who failed to capitalize on the momentum of a 20-13 victory over Nebraska last week which vaulted the program back into the Top 25.

John Chiles led all receivers with 117 yards with a score on five catches, Malcolm Williams also added a TD reception but Tre' Newton was held to 43 yards on nine carries.

"We said during the week that this team is not good enough to beat anybody unless they all come out and play as a team. They didn't," groused Texas head coach Mack Brown. "I told the players it's hard to figure out whether you blame coaches or players. The players didn't get ready to play, and it's the coaches' job to get them ready to play. That's my job to get the coaches ready to play."

Arnaud was picked off by Keena Robinson near midfield on the first play of the fourth quarter, but on the next down, Gilbert was sacked, fumbled and Jake McDonough recovered for ISU on the Texas 40. Four plays later, Robinson rolled up the middle for a 20-yard score and a 28-6 Iowa State lead with 12:47 remaining.

Texas responded with a swift scoring drive, going 80 yards in six plays as Gilbert found Chiles in the back of the end zone for a 17-yard TD. Gilbert then ran for the two-point conversion and it was 28-14 with 11:16 to go.

Gilbert was intercepted on the Longhorns' next series with 6:46 to play, but rebounded on the following drive as Williams made a leaping nine-yard scoring grab with 3:15 to play for a 28-21 contest.

Iowa State picked up an easy first down following the kick, but was held on a 3rd-and-1 from its own 48 and was forced to punt. Texas got the ball on its own 10 with 1:01 remaining, but four straight incompletions gave possession back to the Cyclones. Arnaud took a knee to run off the remaining seconds.

"It changed in the fourth quarter when they thought they might get beat," Brown said when asked if his team's attitude changed noticeably. "I'm proud of the way they fought in the fourth quarter. If they played like that all day, it would've been a blowout."

The lone score of the first quarter came as Arnaud connected with Reynolds for an 18-yard touchdown strike.

Justin Tucker hit a 23-yard field goal less than a minute into the second quarter, after a potential tying touchdown run from Gilbert was overturned by replay, which revealed the quarterback's knee down at the one.

The Cyclones then went up 14-3 as Robinson took a pitch and went around the right side for a one-yard score. The drive was set up by a shanked punt from Texas kicker John Gold and a fair catch by Lenz at the Longhorns' 37.

Tucker missed a 37-yard attempt wide right with 29 seconds left in the half, and Texas failed to reach the end zone with a 3rd-and-goal inside the five on its second series of the third quarter. Tucker was good from 21 yards out, but the Longhorns trailed 14-6 midway through the period.

Iowa State then took the ball 89 yards in nine plays and assumed a 21-6 edge with 2:42 left in the third as Lenz made a leaping grab in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.

Game Notes

Texas had thrashed Iowa State in the schools' last meeting by a 56-3 count in Ames, Iowa on October 13, 2007...The Longhorns were limited to 96 yards rushing but totaled 440 yards to 335 for the Cyclones...Both schools are in action next Saturday as Iowa State hosts Kansas and Texas hosts Baylor.
