Chris Relf completed 8-of-19 passes for 107 yards and carried 20 times for 51 yards for the Bulldogs (6-2), who have won five straight games for the first time since starting the 1999 season 8-0.
Bryan Ellis connected on 23-of-45 throws for 236 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for the Blazers (2-5), who have lost three out of four.
Pat Shed carried 16 times for 69 yards while Frantrell Forrest made five catches for 58 yards for the visitors, who have had four of their games decided by five points or less.
UAB marched down the field 69 yards on 11 plays to regain the lead, 24-23 with 10:16 remaining in the game. Ellis plowed in from a yard out one play after Shed's apparent touchdown was overturned by replay review.
After a short kickoff and subsequent personal foul call on UAB, the Bulldogs started at the Blazers 42 and moved 20 yards before the drive stalled. DePasquale was called on and came through, knocking in a 39-yarder to give the hosts the lead back at 26-24 with 6:53 to go.
DePasquale's final field goal of the night gave the Bulldogs a 29-24 edge with 1:48 left in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Shed brought the ball out to his own 31 yard line before fumbling. Mississippi State recovered at the Blazers 33 and three runs by Relf were good enough to run out the clock to preserve the win.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys battled and I'm really proud of the way the guys fought," said Bulldogs' head coach Dan Mullen. "I think last year there were some guys that would look around on the sidelines and find a way to lose the game. Today, there was none of that. We bent a lot on defense, didn't break, held when we needed to hold at the end and made some plays on offense."
UAB scored first on an 18-yard field goal by Josh Zahn that finished off a 15- play, 84-yard drive. The Blazers had 3rd-and-goal at the one but couldn't punch it in when Justin Brooks was stopped for no gain, setting up the kick.
The Bulldogs responded with a nine-play, 61-yard drive that was capped off by Perkins' four-yard catch and run around the left end with 2:15 to go in the quarter.
DePasquale's 29-yard field goal with 8:42 remaining in the half pushed the hosts lead to 10-3. The boot was set up by Jackie Williams' muffed punt that the Bulldogs recovered at the UAB 35.
The Blazers got the ball back at their own 16 with 1:39 left in the half and moved 12 plays in 84 yards to tie the game. Ellis completed five passes on the march, the last of which he lofted from two yards away to Mike Jones in the left corner of the end zone with just 10 ticks to go before intermission.
Perkins banged his way in from two yards out to finish off a six-play, 63-yard drive that put the Bulldogs back on top 2 1/2 minutes into the third quarter.
The visitors answered right back with a six-play, 60-yard march that was capped by Daniel Bourne's spinning two-yard scoring run 2:23 later. The drive was highlighted by Jones' 42-yard catch and run after he caught a short pass and spun out of a tackle and took it up the right sideline.
DePasquale banged in another 29-yarder to give the Bulldogs a 20-17 edge with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter and added a 43-yard boot 55 seconds into the fourth.
