Garcia completed 31-of-39 passes for 355 yards and an interception for the Gamecocks (5-2, 3-2 SEC), who snapped a seven-game losing streak in SEC road games (last win was at Kentucky in 2008).
Maddox carried the ball 24 times for 146 yards. Alshon Jeffery hauled in nine passes for 158 yards and a score while Tori Gurley caught 13 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown for South Carolina, which is 5-2 for the third straight year.
"It was good night for the Gamecocks, we are very happy to have won the game," South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said. "A lot of guys played really well tonight. Brian Maddox made some really nice runs. Stephen Garcia hit some passes, although a lot of them were short. We got the big one with Alshon Jeffery at the end to sort of put it away."
Larry Smith connected on 13-of-31 passes for 142 yards for the Commodores (2-5, 1-3), who have lost three of four. Smith also carried the ball 15 times for 48 yards and a score.
Vanderbilt broke a scoreless tie with about 10 1/2 minutes to play in the second quarter. The Commodores converted a pair of third downs on a 12-play drive that covered 83 yards. Faced with a 3rd-and-goal from the three, Smith scampered into the end zone to make it 7-0.
South Carolina tied the game right before the half. Gurley ended a seven-play drive with a 15-yard TD catch.
The Gamecocks took the lead for good late in the third frame. Maddox capped an impressive 12-play, 93-yard drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown for a 14-7 edge with 3:17 to go.
South Carolina was about to add three more points early in the fourth, but Spencer Lanning's 26-yarder was blocked.
The Gamecocks started a drive from their own 28 with about 7 1/2 minutes to play. On the second play, Garcia threw a perfect pass down the right sideline for Jeffery, who sprinted into the end zone for a 72-yard score.
Vanderbilt failed to cross midfield for the remainder of the game.
"We had a very poor performance in the second half, offensively," Vanderbilt head coach Robbie Caldwell said. "It's disappointing. We are going to have to do some things so we are prepared and ready to go. It was a great comeback from last week as far as a defensive effort. We played a good football team tonight and had a chance to beat them. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. There's no excuses."
Game Notes
South Carolina owns a 16-4 series advantage over Vanderbilt, which includes a 14-10 victory over the Commodores last season...Spurrier improved his all- time record against Vanderbilt to 17-2 (5-2 at Carolina, 10-0 at Florida, 2-0 at Duke). He also picked up his 40th win as South Carolina head coach, making him just the fourth coach in school history to reach that total (Rex Enright, Jim Carlen, Paul Dietzel)...The Gamecocks had 484 yards of total offense, compared to 250 for the Commodores.
