Auburn jumps past Oregon, Boise State atop BCS poll
Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Auburn Tigers leapfrogged a pair of schools to become the top-ranked team in the Bowl Championship Series poll for the first time in school history.The Tigers (.9371) are 8-0 for the first time since 2004 after defeating LSU, 24-17, in their most recent contest on Saturday. Their resume also includes wins over Arkansas and South Carolina, and they are the lone unbeaten team left in the SEC.
Despite being ranked third in both the Harris Poll and USA Today poll, four of the seven computers have Auburn ranked No. 1, with no computer ranking the Tigers lower than third.
No. 2 and No. 3 remained the same from last week, with AP poll No. 1 Oregon occupying the second spot once again after a 60-13 rout of UCLA last Thursday to improve to 7-0. The Ducks (.9069), who are ranked atop the human polls for the first time in school history, were ranked as low as 11th by the computers while not being ranked higher than sixth.
Boise State (.8846) was once again third following a bye week. The Broncos resume their schedule on Tuesday night at home against Louisiana Tech.
TCU (.8833) moved up one spot to fourth, while unbeaten Michigan State (.8387) moved up a pair of spots to fifth after a win over Northwestern.
Missouri (.8006) had the biggest jump among last week's teams ranked in the BCS poll, moving up five spots to sixth following a home win over Oklahoma (.6691), which fell from the BCS' top spot last week to ninth. The Tigers are now 7-0 for the first time since 1960.
Alabama (.7100) moved up one spot to seventh, while Utah (.7049) went from ninth to eighth this week. After the Sooners, Wisconsin (.6584) rounds out the top 10.
The only undefeated Football Bowl Subdivision teams that remain are: Auburn, Oregon, Boise State, TCU, Michigan State, Missouri and Utah.
The BCS system, in place since 1998, is computed by averaging the percentage totals of the Harris Interactive poll, USA Today poll and computer rankings. The top two teams will meet for the BCS national title in Glendale, Arizona on January 10, 2011.
Last season, the system pitted Alabama and Texas against one another, with the Crimson Tide rolling to a 37-21 victory.
