Kentucky opened the season with three consecutive victories, but things have gone down hill since for first-year head coach Joke Phillips and his players. The Wildcats have lost four of their last five games, including a 44-31 setback to Georgia last weekend. Kentucky is 1-4 in conference action, and while an SEC title is out of the question, a win this weekend would move the squad closer to league respectability.
Mississippi State is one of the hottest teams in the SEC, as the club has recorded five consecutive victories to move to 6-2 overall. The Bulldogs took a break from league play last weekend, and although they certainly weren't at their best, they managed to knock off UAB in a 29-24 final. MSU is 4-1 at home, and Dan Mullen has done a tremendous job of turning the program around.
"I am really proud of the way our guys battled and fought," said Mullen after the UAB game. "I think last year, there were some guys that would look around and try to find a way to lose that game."
Kentucky owns a 21-16 series advantage over Mississippi State, but the Bulldogs recorded a 31-24 victory in last season's matchup.
Kentucky tailback Derrick Locke is listed as questionable for this weekend's game with a shoulder injury, and the Wildcats are certainly much better with the runner than without him. Locke has rushed for 574 yards and seven touchdowns in the six games that he has played. All-purpose threat Randall Cobb has rushed for 195 yards and three scores while also hauling in 47 catches for 511 yards and five touchdowns. Cobb has thrown three touchdown passes as well on just four completions and has scored on a punt return, proof that he is a threat every time he touches the football. Quarterback Mike Hartline has connected on 67.4 percent of his passes for 2,144 yards and 17 touchdowns against four interceptions, tremendous numbers that have been overshadowed by the team's inconsistent play. Kentucky is averaging 34.8 ppg and 428.5 total ypg this season.
Opponents are generating 31.6 ppg against Kentucky, which is yielding 352.9 ypg defensively. The Wildcats have already allowed 22 rushing touchdowns, as they are permitting 176.1 rushing ypg at a clip of 4.7 ypc. The pass defense has been weak at times as well, surrendering 13.6 yards per completion. Just 12 sacks and 11 takeaways have been mustered, as not enough impact plays have been made by the defense.
Against Georgia last time out, Kentucky earned a 423-290 advantage in total yards. The Wildcats were 9-of-15 on third down conversion attempts and got 353 passing yards and four touchdowns from Hartline. Unfortunately, they turned the ball over four times and forced just one giveaway, the most obvious reason for the setback.
"You just play the next one," said a disappointed Hartline after the Georgia loss. "The season is almost over and the SEC East is pretty much out of reach but we have to keep fighting for our best bowl game. We have to keep going and six is our number, so we have to fight for that and from there get to the best one after that."
Mississippi State played without tailback Vick Ballard against UAB, as he was nursing a sore ankle, but Ballard is expected to be back in the lineup this week. He has rushed for 516 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 6.6 yards per attempt, and he is clearly key to the offense 's success. Quarterback Chris Relf has taken the majority of snaps for Mullen, and he has completed 55.3 percent of his throws for 815 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions. The receiver to watch is Chad Bumphis, who has made 33 grabs for 461 yards and four scores. MSU is generating 28.6 ppg and while posting 390.5 total ypg.
Against UAB, Relf only completed 8-of-19 passes for 107 yards, but he tossed a touchdown pass and wasn't intercepted. LaDarius Perkins did a tremendous job filling in for Ballard, as he rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. MSU held the ball for over 33 minutes and finished with 271 rushing yards.
Defensively, Mississippi State is limiting opponents to 17.0 ppg and 335.5 total ypg, and the club has done its best work against the run. Foes of the Bulldogs have managed a mere 118.5 rushing ypg at a clip of 3.6 yards per carry, and just six rushing scores have been mustered to date. The pass defense certainly has some room for improvement, as MSU has been rather mediocre in that aspect of the game. Chris White has been a force for the Bulldogs, as 12 of his 71 total tackles have resulted in lost yardage, including five sacks.
Last weekend, the Bulldogs permitted 354 total yards and 24 first downs to UAB. They allowed 236 passing yards to the Blazers, but it took UAB 45 passing attempt to reach that yardage total.
