The Aztecs, who are much improved from their 4-8 mark of a year ago, sit at 5-2 and in third place in the conference at 2-1. They are coming off a sluggish performance at winless New Mexico, a game they won 30-20 as 23.5- point favorites. However, they have not won the second game on back-to-back road trips in their last 10 tries.
San Diego State has also not won in Laramie since 2002 and five of the last eight meetings have been decided by five points or less, with the Aztecs favored in the majority of those contests. In addition, the last time they won more than two road games in a single season was all the way back in 2000. Brady Hoke's squad has already posted a pair of wins away from home so it's asking a lot of this bunch to walk off with another victory.
The Aztecs are 3-14 SU in their last 17 road games and quarterback Ryan Lindley has not fared too well outside the friendly confines of Qualcomm Stadium. The junior has completed just 47% of his passes on the road this year while hitting at a 63% clip at home.
Running back Ronnie Hillman ran for over 200 yards against Missouri in week three after gaining 150 versus New Mexico State the game before. However, since his outburst against the Tigers, he's only garnered 90 yards or more on one occasion, and he is also coming into this game with a hip pointer suffered in last week's win over New Mexico. The freshman is listed as probable but he will most certainly be less than 100%.
Wyoming enters the contest off a tough road loss to BYU. The Cowboys trailed by just five points inside the final minute with the ball at the Cougars' 25- yard line but failed to score.
It was their sixth loss of the season making this contest against San Diego State the most important game of the year. With matchups against New Mexico, UNLV, and Colorado State still remaining, the Cowboys could still find themselves in a bowl game if they upset the Aztecs on Saturday.
Wyoming's overall statistics are abysmal - last in the country in total offense and 118th in scoring. However, four of its eight opponents (Boise State, TCU, Utah, and Texas) are currently ranked in the top six in total defense. Take away those four games and the Cowboys are 2-2 with the two losses coming by a total of 11 points.
This one will be a lot closer than the line suggests.
Take Wyoming plus the points in the lone Five-Star play of the week.
THREE-STAR SELECTIONS
Kansas State hasn't been to a bowl game since 2006. The Wildcats were close last season with six victories but two came against Football Championship Subdivision teams. This year, they are 5-2 with five games still to go. They can clinch a spot in the postseason with a home win over Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys gave it all they had last Saturday before falling by 10 points to Nebraska. That loss snapped their six-game winning streak and it will be difficult to get up for this matchup immediately following their biggest contest of the season.
Kansas State has already played a game after its most important battle of the season (a blowout win over Kansas) and the Wildcats were still able to cover at Baylor. They'll match strides offensively with Oklahoma State, especially with Justin Blackmon suspended for the Cowboys.
Furthermore, these two teams have met only three times since 2003 and each contest was decided by four points or less.
Take Kansas State plus the points.
Southern Miss has payback in mind when UAB comes to town. The Golden Eagles were surprised by the Blazers in Birmingham last season, 30-17, but a couple of things were in UAB's favor that game. First, the Blazers had been humiliated the year before losing 70-14, and second, the Golden Eagles played without running back Damion Fletcher and wide receiver DeAndre Brown.
Southern Miss had an extra week to prepare for revenge of its own in this one while UAB gave its all against Mississippi State. Look for the Golden Eagles to reach the 40-point mark for the fourth straight game while holding the Blazers in the 20s.
Take Southern Miss minus the points.
Speaking of Mississippi State, the Bulldogs remain home for the second straight week when they take on a Kentucky team that literally gave away last Saturday's game to Georgia.
The Wildcats lost by 13 points despite outgaining the Bulldogs by over 130 yards. Four turnovers led to 14 Georgia points and the 'Cats had little chance to pick up their second straight upset victory. (The week before, they took down South Carolina at home.)
Mississippi State has three SEC West matchups coming up after the bye week, including one versus Alabama on Nov. 13 so the Bulldogs might take Kentucky lightly since the Wildcats have won just one conference game out of five.
Take Kentucky plus the points.
TWO-STAR PICKS
Go with Arizona (at UCLA), Texas (hosting Baylor), Toledo (at Eastern Michigan), Utah (at Air Force), and Penn State (hosting Michigan).
ONE-STAR CHOICES
Take Oklahoma (versus Colorado), Western Michigan (against Northern Illinois), Houston (at Memphis), Illinois (versus Purdue) and Tulsa (against Notre Dame).
AFTER EIGHT WEEKS
Yours truly went 2-7 last week for an eight-week 51-39-2 total, good for a 57 percent winning percentage. Breaking the totals down by the star system, the Five-Star plays are 2-3, the Three-Star selections are 14-7-1, the Two-Star picks are 23-17-1, and the One-Star choices are 12-12.
As a reminder, the Five-Star plays are those games where my key selections and my "Power Numbers" match. The Three-Star choices are my personal picks, while the Two-Star plays are the "power number" picks - games with at least a five- point differential between my line and the actual line. Finally, the One-Star plays are my personal secondary selections.
