Griffin completed 16-of-24 passes for 219 yards and an interception for the Bears (7-2, 4-1 Big 12), who beat Texas for the first time since a 23-21 victory on November 1, 1997.
Jay Finley carried the ball 15 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. Terrance Williams and Kendall Wright each caught a TD pass for Baylor, which cracked the top-25 poll this week for the first time since September 5, 1993 (No. 24).
"I am really proud of our football team, our players, our staff, our fans because it has been a while since we have given any proof to believe and people have really taken to it and supported in a tremendous fashion," Baylor head coach Art Briles said. "As a part of the football team, hats off to the people who are supporting us and to our players. I think they are a resilient bunch and have great leadership in general and great senior leadership, and the guys always believe something good is going to happen."
Garrett Gilbert connected on 22-of-39 passes for 231 yards and an interception for the Longhorns (4-4, 2-3), who have lost two in a row and four of five overall. Gilbert also carried the ball eight times for 79 yards and score.
Texas had posted at least 10 wins in each of the last nine seasons, becoming just the second team in college football history to do so. That streak has officially come to a halt with Saturday's defeat.
"Congratulations to Baylor. They have a good team. It's by far the best team they've had since we've been here," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "It all goes without saying to [Baylor QB] Robert Griffin. The guy is unbelievable. I don't know how he can be out of the Heisman talk. He was the difference tonight. He made play, after play, after play, after play. He makes them with his feet. He makes everyone else around him better. He also threw the ball better. He also threw the ball and made big play, after big play."
Trailing 19-10 in the third quarter, Baylor ripped off 20 unanswered points to take the lead. Texas was about to add to its lead, but Justin Tucker missed a 48-yard field goal. On the first play of the ensuing Bears drive, Finley scampered 69 yards into the end zone to cut the gap to 19-17 with just under 4 1/2 minutes remaining.
Antonio Johnson then picked off Gilbert and returned the ball 20 yards to the Texas 11. Griffin capped a seven-play drive with a sneak on the first play of the fourth period. A failed two-point conversion left Baylor ahead by four, 23-19.
The Bears put together a seven-play, 85-yard march on their next possession. On 3rd-and-9 from the Longhorns 30, Wright caught a TD pass from Griffin to make it a 30-19 game with 8 1/2 minutes to play.
Tucker's 21-yard field goal cut the deficit to 30-22 with 3:40 to go. Baylor went three-and-out on offense, and Texas took over at its own eight with 2:34 left. The Longhorns actually fumbled the punt, but recovered the football.
Texas got no further than its 23-yard line, and the Bears ran out the rest of the clock.
Baylor's first possession of the game resulted in Griffin fumbling the football. Texas' Sam Acho recovered the ball at the 39-yard line of the Bears. That led to a 26-yard Tucker field goal.
Aaron Jones responded with a 24-yard field goal on the ensuing Baylor possession to make it a 3-3 game with over 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter.
The Bears were forced to punt the ball early in the second quarter. The Longhorns lost control of the football multiple times on the return. They got the ball back each time, with the last time being in their own end zone. Baylor thought it was a safety, but it was ruled a touchback following review.
Texas put together a 12-play drive that Tucker capped with a 31-yarder. He made a 49-yard field goal on the next Longhorns possession to make it a 9-3 game with 4:13 left.
Faced with a 3rd-and-10, Griffin hit Williams on a slant near midfield. Williams broke a tackle before sprinting 59 yards for a touchdown and 10-9 Baylor lead with 43 seconds remaining before intermission.
Tucker made a 40-yarder right before the half to give Texas a 12-10 edge.
The Longhorns opened the second half with a nine-play, 80-yard drive. Gilbert capped the march with a 20-yard TD run for a 19-10 advantage.
Game Notes
Texas owns a commanding 73-23-4 series advantage over Baylor. The Longhorns had won 12 straight against the Bears coming into Saturday...Baylor has scored at least 30 points in all but one game this season...Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had his number retired prior to the game. McCoy, a two-time Walter Camp national player of the year, Heisman Trophy finalist, 2009 Maxwell Award recipient, and current signal-caller for the Cleveland Browns, saw his No. 12 permanently honored during a ceremony. He joined former Longhorn greats Earl Campbell (1974-77), Bobby Layne (1944-47), Tommy Nobis (1963-65), Ricky Williams (1995-98) and Vince Young (2003-05) as the only Texas national players of the year to be so honored...Tucker tied a single-game school record with five field goals. The record was set by Jeff Ward at Arkansas in 1985 and tied by Kris Stockton at Texas Tech in 2000 and Ryan Bailey at UCF in 2007...Baylor is 7-2 for the first time since 1991 (Bears finished 8-4)...Griffin threw his 38th and 39th career touchdown passes, to break Shawn Bell's school record of 38.
