Oregon tops AP poll for third straight week
New York, NY (Sports Network) - The Oregon Ducks maintained the top spot in the Associated Press college football poll for the third consecutive week.The Ducks (8-0) traveled to Los Angeles and defeated the USC Trojans, 52-32, to stay undefeated with four games remaining. Oregon will look to move to 9-0 next week when the Washington Huskies go to Eugene for a Pac-10 battle.
Oregon received 49 first-place votes and a total of 1,487 points from a nationwide media panel. The Ducks strengthened their hold on No. 1 by seven points from last week, including five more first-place votes.
Nos. 2 through 4 remained the same from last week, as Boise State (7-0), Auburn (9-0) and TCU (9-0) occupied those respective spots again. The Broncos played on Tuesday and easily beat Louisiana Tech, 49-20, while the Tigers dismantled the Ole Miss Rebels, 51-31. The Horned Frogs were 48-6 winners over UNLV.
Boise State, which received 11 first-place votes last week, got only seven such votes this week. Auburn had two first-place votes, and TCU also had two.
Former No. 1 Alabama moved into the fifth spot from sixth without playing a game, while Utah jumped two spots to sixth after a win over Air Force.
Wisconsin, Ohio State, Nebraska and Stanford rounded out the top-10. The Cornhuskers jumped from 14th to ninth after dealing Missouri its first loss.
Missouri fell seven spots from seventh to 14th, while previously unbeaten Michigan State dropped 11 spots to 16th after losing at Iowa. Oklahoma, LSU and Arizona are 11th-13th, respectively, while the Hawkeyes moved up three spots to 15th.
After Michigan State, Arkansas is 17th, followed by South Carolina, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech.
The final five ranked teams are Mississippi State, Baylor, North Carolina State, Florida State and Nevada. USC and Miami-Florida dropped out of this week's poll.
There are several matchups between ranked teams next weekend, but the most important one features two non-BCS schools. In a bout between top-10 teams, TCU travels to Salt Lake City to take on Utah in what is likely the de facto Mountain West Conference championship.
Other top matchups feature Arizona traveling to Stanford in a Pac-10 contest, Baylor heading to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 and Arkansas-South Carolina and Alabama-LSU in the SEC.
