The Buckeyes moved up three slots to number two with 105 and only a half-point behind Louisville. OSU pounded the Hawkeyes last Saturday night, as Troy Smith threw for four touchdowns and Antonio Pittman ran for 117 yards and one TD. The over/under was pretty much decided at the half, as OSU took a 21-10 lead into the locker room.
Ohio State is the hottest team in the country, having won and covered 12 straight games since last seasons loss to Penn State. The Buckeyes are 6-0 ATS in their last six when favored by two touchdowns or more, and they are approximately five-TD favorites over Bowling Green this Saturday.
Clemson jumps up to the number three spot after thrashing Louisiana Tech, 51-0. The Tigers now have outscored their last two opponents 103-7, defeating the Bulldogs and North Carolina. Clemson would be undefeated were it not for a one-point OT loss to Boston College.
The Tigers are a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS in their other four games and have a date with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem this week. The Demon Deacons actually have a better SU record at 5-0, but are only 2-2 ATS vs. board opponents. Wake has had its way with the Tigers in the past few seasons, winning two of the last three meetings.
The only win for Clemson came at home in double overtime in the '04 opener. The Tigers were favored by 11 but failed to cover and were actually outgained by Wake, 410 yards to 371. The "over" has won out in the last four meetings, so look for another high-scoring game between these two ACC schools.
California leapfrogs to the fourth slot after destroying Oregon State, 41-13. This game came a week after the Bears had stormed through Arizona State, 49-21. The Golden Bears finally are playing like they were expected to before the season began. However, their loss to Tennessee will cost them a chance to play for a national championship.
BAYOU BENGALS
LSU held steady at 103.5 but dropped from second to fifth after a 48-17 win over Mississippi State. This weeks game with Florida means the season for the Tigers. A loss here, and they can forget about any title hopes. LSU is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven conference road games, with the only loss coming by one- half point at Auburn earlier this season.
The Tigers have won and covered the last two match-ups with the Gators in Gainesville, including a 24-21 victory in 04. Florida controlled the game and in fact led 21-7, but LSU stormed back with 17 unanswered points and won the game on a Marcus Randall TD pass to Joseph Addai with 27 seconds left on the clock.
The Gators might be without RB DeShawn Wynn, who is questionable with a twisted right knee. The last four meetings all went under the total, while three of the last four LSU road games stayed "under," as have nine of Florida's last 12 home tilts.
USC ESCAPES
Southern Cal drops to sixth place after barely getting by Washington State in Pullman. The Cougars roughed up USCs defense for 426 yards and had a chance for the upset, but their final drive was cut short when the Trojans intercepted Alex Brinks pass deep in USC territory as time ran out.
Washington State still covered, and the game did go over the number with 50 points scored on 844 yards of total offense. The "over" players needed 17 fourth-quarter points to bail them out, as the score was a relatively low scoring-affair (21-12) after 45 minutes. Seven of the Trojans last nine home games have gone over the total, so look for one more coming this Saturday when Washington comes to town.
PRESEASON NUMBER ONE
Auburn, my preseason choice to win it all, has not been playing like a top team as of late. A letdown was expected vs. Buffalo after the tough home win against LSU the week before. However, the Tigers did not show their stripes in a lackluster seven-point win over South Carolina.
The game might have gone to overtime after the Gamecocks drove 75 yards on their final drive, but QB Syvelle Newton threw an interception.
The Tigers' vaunted defense allowed 395 yards of total offense to South Carolina, something head coach Tommy Tuberville should be very alarmed about. Expect a much better defensive effort vs. Arkansas, as Auburn tunes up for the Florida game the following week.
LOOK OUT FOR THE WOLVERINES
Ohio State is getting all the headlines in the Big Ten, but Michigan is just as deserving. The Wolverines are allowing a measly 36 rushing yards per game, which leads the nation. They held Wisconsins P.J. Hill Jr., the countrys sixth-leading rusher, to 54 yards on 20 carries in Michigans 27-13 win over the Badgers.
Next up for the Maize and Blue is in-state rival Michigan State, which is in a free-fall mode once again after losing to Illinois, of all teams. Michigan has controlled this series in the past few years, winning four straight and covering three.
The "over" has won out in three of those four as well. Michigan should be able to control MSUs ground attack now that Javon Ringer is out for the year, but QB Drew Stanton could put up some big numbers playing from behind, as the Wolverines have allowed nine TDs in their five games.
Texas and Florida round out the top 10 with Oregon and West Virginia knocking on the door. The Longhorns have their annual Red River Shootout with Oklahoma on Saturday, and the Sooners have dominated the series this decade. Oklahoma is 5-1 SU and ATS since 00 but got smoked last season, 45-12. The "over" has been the right side in three of the last four meetings.
The Top 10 as of Wednesday, October 4 looks like this:
1) Louisville, 105.5; 2) Ohio State, 105; 3) Clemson, 104.5; 4) California, 104; 5) LSU, 103.5; 6) USC, 102.5; 7) Auburn, 101.5; 7) Michigan, 101.5; 9) Texas, 101; 10) Florida, 100.5
THIS WEEKS TOP PLAYS
Indiana at Illinois begins the action in Week 6. The Fighting Illini took down Michigan State last week despite being 26 1/2-point underdogs. However, the Spartans were ripe for the picking coming off the loss to Notre Dame. Illinois came into the game having been outscored 88-28 in three Division 1-A contests. The Illini are 0-1 ATS this season when favored and only 2-5 ATS (4-3 SU) in their last seven games as the chalk.
Indiana is no better than Illinois but no worse. Star wide receiver James Hardy returned from a two-game suspension last week and will be much more effective with a game under his belt. The Hoosiers are 5-0 ATS in their first conference road game in the last five years, and despite their recent quarterback troubles, will put up just enough points to get the victory.
Take Indiana for the outright win.
Washington State at Oregon State is the next big play. Both offenses are ranked in the top half of the Pac 10, with the Cougars averaging 29 ppg and the Beavers 30. Last year, OSU won 44-33 at home, and the Beavers have covered the last three meetings. The last four match-ups in this series went over the number, with the total points scored ranging from 57 to 77.
Go with the "over" out in Corvallis.
In other action, four dogs are primed for covers: Navy at Air Force, Nevada at Hawaii, Miss State vs. West Virginia and SMU at UTEP.
