The Huskies scored three touchdowns in five minutes of action in the second quarter and then held on for a 21-10 victory at Arizona. The UW offense isn't overwhelming opponents this season, but has decent balance, thanks to a rushing attack that averages 167.0 yards per game. The team has a three-pronged rushing attack, with tailbacks Louis Rankin (6.1 ypc, two TDs) and Kenny James (3.8 ypc, three TDs) and quarterback Isaiah Stanback (4.8 ypc, two TDs). Stanback has been decent with his arm as well, completing 56.7 percent of his passes, for 951 yards, with eight TDs and three interceptions. Senior Sonny Shackelford has clearly been Washington's top offensive playmaker this season. He is averaging 15 yards per catch and leads the team in receptions (21), receiving yards (315) and TDs (five).
It has been a bend-but-don't-break defense for the Huskies in 2006, although it has led to 23.0 ppg for the opposition. The pass defense has been vulnerable at times (235.6 ypg), but opponents going to the air often has led to five interceptions in the first five games. Senior strong safety C.J. Wallace leads the team in total tackles with 48 stops. Senior linebacker Scott White however is close behind (41 tackles) and leads the team in big plays, pacing the Huskies in TFLs (seven) and sacks (three), while recording an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Cornerback Mesphin Forrester is an exciting youngster. The 6-2 sophomore has just 11 total tackles on the season, but leads the defense with two interceptions. Washington will have to do a better job at rushing the passer though, as the team has just 13 sacks in the first five games. Getting after USC quarterback John David Booty is a must this weekend, if the Huskies are to be competitive in L.A.
The USC offense is chock-full of playmakers and it was veteran wideout Steve Smith's turn to shine last weekend in Pullman, as he hauled in 11 balls, for a career-high 186 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Trojans to a hard-fought victory over the Cougars. His performance was certainly needed as All-American wideout Dwayne Jarrett didn't make the trip with a sore shoulder. Booty has been solid under center thus far for USC, completing an efficient 67.6 percent of his passes, for 966 yards, with 10 TDs and just two interceptions. With Smith's big performance, he has now taken over the lead on the team in receptions (23) and receiving yards (315) and is tied with Jarrett (20 catches, for 207 yards) in TD receptions (three). If Jarrett plays in this game, he will have an opportunity to pass Stanford's Ken Margerum for the Pac-10 record for career TD catches, as both have 32. While the USC passing attack is averaging a steady 246.2 ypg, the rushing attack has been effective as well (167.8 ypg). Freshman Emmanuel Moody has been the best of the backs, averaging a whopping 7.3 ypc and leading the way with 334 yards and two TDs.
Although the USC offense has taken a step or two back in terms of sheer offensive numbers from the last few seasons, the defense has taken a step forward from last year. This season, the Trojans have been masterful at shutting down both the run (78.2 ypg) and the pass (189.2 ypg). The strong numbers are a welcome sight, because the team has failed to really generate a pass rush in 2006 (just seven sacks in the first four games). The strength of this unit is in the linebacking corps early on. Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga leads the team in tackles (31), with three TFLs, one sack and one interception. Fellow backer Keith Rivers (21 stops) has a sack, a forced fumble and fumble recovery to his credit. Sophomore Brian Cushing (21 tackles, team-high four TFLs, one sack) is a young, versatile player that can line up as a rush linebacker or with his fist in the dirt along the line.
The Huskies are certainly making strides in Willingham's second season in Seattle, but the team has not arrived yet. The Huskies will struggle in a game of this magnitude, while USC flourishes in such outings. Booty will do enough with his arm whether or not Jarrett plays and the Trojan defense will do the rest.
