If Louisiana Tech was thinking it would find its offensive stride against the Tigers last weekend it was sorely mistaken. The squad gained just 33 net yards on the ground on 29 attempts, with Daniel Porter checking in with a team-best 58 yards on 10 carries. Zac Champion was knocked around in the pocket time and time again, hitting 20-of-35 for 194 yards, while getting sacked three times and picked off three times as well. Eric Newman posted a team-high nine catches for 101 yards but it made little difference. Newman leads the team overall with 16 receptions for 229 yards and a score, while Johnathan Holland checks in with 15 catches for 227 yards as the only other player with more than seven grabs through four games. Champion has hit on just over half his pass attempts, but his four TDs are offset by four picks now. The rushing offense is almost nowhere to be found, accounting for only 87.8 ypg to rank last in the WAC and 99th in the country. With a mere 13.8 ppg to this point, the team is eighth in the conference and 107th in the nation in that department.
Although they controlled the ball for less than 25 minutes on Saturday, the Tigers were allowed to run all over the field, producing a ridiculous 393 yards on 41 attempts versus the LaTech front line. Add to that another 133 yards through the air and the Bulldogs permitted 526 yards on just 58 plays. Brannon Jackson produced a game-high nine tackles, one of which came behind the line of scrimmage, but his was the only TFL of the game for the Bulldogs. Quin Harris, Robert Crosby and Marquis McBeath all recovered a fumble, but it made no difference in the final score. After the awful display against Clemson, the Bulldogs are now last in the WAC and 116th in the nation in run defense, allowing 234.8 ypg. That wouldn't be that bad if it weren't for the fact that the pass efficiency defense is dead last among 119 Division I-A programs with a rating of 169.3. The scoring defense, which is giving up a hefty 41.5 ppg, is ahead of only Florida Atlantic and Temple right now.
Ian Johnson and the rushing attack for the Broncos took a back seat to quarterback Jared Zabransky on Saturday, as the signal-caller threw for 210 yards and one touchdown and ran for another in the overwhelming win against Utah on the road. Johnson did finish with a team-high 88 yards on 14 carries for an average of nearly six and a half yards per attempt, while Vinny Perretta came out of nowhere to post 65 yards and one touchdown on 12 attempts in the win as well. Despite the off game, Johnson is still first in the conference in rushing, fifth in the nation, with an average of 142.8 ypg. With an average of better than seven yards per carry, it is easy to see how BSU has vaulted into the top-10 nationally in rushing with 215.4 ypg. Zabransky has been rather conservative in the pocket for the most part, hitting for 177 ypg and a total of seven scores, with his laid back approach resulting in only two interceptions as well. At 36.2 ppg, the Broncos are not only first in the conference but also 14th in the nation this week.
The Broncos put together a solid effort on defense once again when they lined up against Utah last week, holding the home team to just eight first downs and 51 yards passing at Rice-Eccles. Boise State recorded four interceptions against the combination of Brett Ratliff and Tommy Grady, with Korey Hall posting two of those picks. Hall, who was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the WAC on Monday, also registered a team-high eight tackles, while Orlando Scandrick continued to cause havoc in the backfield with one and a half tackles for loss. Except for the Wyoming game where the Broncos scored a mere 17 points, every opponent has had to play catch up versus Boise State this season, which goes a long way in explaining how the unit has managed to hold those teams to just 79.2 ypg on the ground. By limiting squads to just 170.8 ypg through the air as well, the Broncos find themselves ranked first in the league and 14th in the country in total defense. Hall, who has almost twice as many tackles (47) as his closest teammate, already has three interceptions and fumble recovery to his credit.
One would think that the Bulldogs would be able to build themselves up for this conference meeting and put on a good show, but the fact is Louisiana Tech is simply not a good team this season. How good, or bad for that matter, will be evident by how much the Broncos win by this weekend.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Boise State 42, Louisiana Tech 10
