Hawkeyes have sights set on Boilermakers in Iowa City

(Sports Network) - A couple of Big Ten programs with just a single loss on the season thus far suit up in Iowa City this weekend as the 19th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes try to defend their home field against the Purdue Boilermakers. Last weekend the Hawkeyes went into their meeting with top-ranked Ohio State undefeated, but despite playing at home against the high-powered league foe, Iowa still came out on the losing end of a 38-17 decision, leaving the squad winless all-time versus number one rated programs. As for the Boilermakers, they too entered last week having run off four straight wins to begin the 2006 campaign, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish put an end to that in Purdue's first road game of the season, defeating the visitors by a final of 35-21. Last season, the Hawkeyes captures a 34-17 victory on the road at this time against Purdue. Despite the win, Iowa still trails in the all-time series with the Boilermakers by a count of 44-31-3.

Against a tough Notre Dame defense, Curtis Painter looked calm in the pocket as he passed for 398 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Boilermakers, but despite Painter's efforts the squad still suffered their first loss of the season. Selwyn Lymon put together a career day as he reeled in eight passes for a personal best of 238 yards and both touchdowns, with one of those scores coming on an impressive 88-yard pass play. Kory Sheets also scored once on the ground, gaining a team-high 47 yards rushing on seven carries in the process as well. Clearly the rushing attack for the Boilermakers is secondary this season, averaging only 149.6 ypg to rank ninth in the Big Ten and 51st in the nation. More importantly is a passing game that is first in the league and fifth in the country this week with an average of 317.6 ypg. Because of those numbers the Boilermakers are also first in the conference in total offense and scoring with 467.2 ypg and 36.8 ppg, respectively. In terms of total offense, Painter is carrying a lot of the weight on his own shoulders as he ranks third in the country with 318.2 ypg heading into action this week. But don't look past Sheets who is tied for second in the nation in scoring with 11 touchdowns.

As they were for Painter, the skies were open for Notre Dame's Brady Quinn as well on Saturday as he was allowed to throw for 316 yards and two touchdowns against the Purdue defense. But the Boilermakers did give Quinn some trouble as they brought him down four times. Credited with one and a half sacks was Anthony Spencer who finished with a team-high 15 tackles and a remarkable 4.5 TFLs for a loss of 20 yards as well. But as tough as that sounds, the fact remains that the Irish were still allowed to control the ball more than 38 minutes and were never forced into a turnover. As well as the Purdue offense has been operating thus far in 2006, clearly there is a concern on the other side of the ball with a defense that ranks last in the Big Ten and 111th among 119 Division I-A programs with 419.4 ypg allowed. Due to that considerable number, the Boilermakers are making life tough for themselves as they rank last in the Big Ten and 101st in the nation with 30 ppg allowed. The pass defense, which took it on the chin versus Notre Dame, has been vulnerable all season and now ranks 116th in the nation with 291 ypg surrendered. Spencer, who has a total of 43 stops through five games, is first in the nation with almost three TFLs per game and is also third in the country with 1.4 sacks per outing.

Up until the middle of the second quarter on Saturday the Hawkeyes stayed close to Ohio State, but then the Iowa offense began to fizzle and disappear. Drew Tate lost some of his composure as he completed 19-of-41 for 249 yards and just a single touchdown. Tate was sacked twice and intercepted three times in the setback as well. When the Hawkeyes turned to their running game there was barely any room to be found, with the squad coming up with just 87 yards on 20 attempts. The bigger problem was that the home team couldn't keep the offense on the field long enough to make a difference, controlling the ball for a mere 19:30 of the contest. Tate, who has completed 57.5 percent of his passes this season, has eight touchdowns to his credit, but after the OSU failure also has five interceptions. Last year the signal-caller finished with a mere seven picks, against 22 TDs. Perhaps Purdue could give Tate some confidence this weekend, seeing as how the senior has thrown for 632 yards and five touchdowns against the Boilermakers in the last two meetings.

Although he threw for only 186 yards, Troy Smith made all of his pass attempts count as he finished with four touchdowns against the Hawkeyes. Once known as a running quarterback of sorts, Smith took off only when he had to, gaining 20 yards on seven attempts, instead allowing Antonio Pittman to put up a game-high 117 yards on 25 carries. Iowa did keep Ten Ginn out of the end zone while allowing the star receiver to reel in seven passes for 69 yards. The team's bigger concern should have been Anthony Gonzalez who turned two of his five receptions into scores. Iowa remains one of only a handful of Division I-A teams yet to recover a fumble this season, which is the main reason why the program is ranked 106th in the country with a turnover margin of minus-1.2 after five games. The scoring defense for the squad is quite impressive though, allowing just 16.4 ppg even after letting the Buckeyes drop 38 points on them. However, in the Big Ten that still ranks the team just fourth which goes to show just how tough defenses are this season in the league.

This game is going to come down to the quarterback that makes the fewest mistakes. Assuming Tate can keep cool under pressure then the Hawkeyes should be in line to get back into the win column.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Iowa 33, Purdue 23
