With RBs Freddie Barnes and Chris Bullock leading the way, Bowling Green ranks second in the MAC in rushing (208.2 ypg) and has scored 10 of its 16 TDs on the ground. Barnes is third in the league, checking in at 78.4 ypg, and he has reached paydirt a club-best seven times. Bullock, just a freshman, is averaging 5.3 ypc and nearly 60 ypg. Bullock notched the first 100-yard game of his career last week against Ohio University, rumbling his way to 114 yards and a TD, while Barnes carried the ball just 10 times but scored twice. Quarterback Anthony Turner returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous game with an injury, but completed just nine passes for 77 yards. Barnes was the team's leading receiver, logging four catches for 68 yards. BGSU is hardly an offensive juggernaut, averaging 23.8 ppg behind 362.4 total ypg, the bulk of those obviously coming on the ground. The passing attack needs to kick it up a notch, or the Falcons are surely going to wind up with a few more losses before season's end.
Bowling Green owns the MAC's top pass defense, yielding just 147.2 ypg and only three TDs through the air to this point in the season. Defending the run hasn't been nearly as effective, with foes generating 151.8 ypg while scoring 12 TDs. That said, the Falcons put forth a solid defensive effort in last week's win over Ohio, holding the Bobcats to 54 net yards rushing on just 1.7 ypc. OU ranks last in the conference in rushing offense (66 ypg), so perhaps the enthusiasm needs to be tempered a bit, but the Falcons did allow just nine points, collected four sacks and came away with three turnovers. Terrel White, the top tackler in the MAC, led the BGSU stand with a game-high 13 stops, while John Haneline and Jahmal Brown each finished with eight. Diyral Briggs was credited with 3.5 TFLs, and he and Brad Williams combined for three sacks. Brown and Loren Hargrove each recorded a pick, while Antonio Smith pounced on a fumble. Bowling Green is giving up an average of 30 ppg, a figure that doesn't bode well for the Falcons as they challenge the No. 1 team in the land.
The Ohio State offense is averaging better than 32 points and 386 yards per game, and it is the passing attack, under the direction of Heisman hopeful QB Troy Smith, that has done the most damage. Smith, who is a stellar 18-2 as a starter in his career, is completing 65.6 percent of his passes for 214 ypg while throwing a Big Ten-best 12 TDs against only two INTs. The OSU ground game accounts for 154 ypg, with Antonio Pittman spearheading the charge with 113.4 ypg (third-best in the conference) and five scores. Anthony Gonzalez is third in the league in receptions with 24, while Ted Ginn Jr. is hot on his heels with 23 -- the duo combining for nine TDs and 710 yards. Pittman rushed for 117 yards and a TD, giving him 10 straight games with at least one rushing score, Gonzalez had a pair of TD catches, and Smith finished 16-of-25 passing for 186 and a career-high four TDs in last week's win at Iowa. Ginn Jr., who has caught at least one pass in 24 straight games, led all receivers with seven grabs, going for 69 yards. In all, the Buckeyes ran for a season-high 214 yards, converted 5-of-6 red zone opportunities and have now scored at least 24 points in 12 consecutive games.
Despite returning just two starters from last year's unit, the Ohio State defense continues to play surprisingly well. The Buckeyes currently rank first in the Big Ten in scoring defense (9.8 ppg) and turnover margin (+9). Just about all facets of the defense's play have been exceptional, with the unit collecting a league-best 18 sacks and coming up with 11 INTs. James Laurinaitis appears to be the next great linebacker at OSU, having made 41 total tackles through five games and already earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors twice. Up front, Quinn Pitcock and Robert Rose rank fourth and fifth in the Big Ten, respectively, in sacks. Laurinaitis notched his fourth INT of the season last week against Iowa, the Buckeyes picking off Hawkeye QB Drew Tate three times. It was the third time this season Ohio State has recorded at least three picks in a game. The Buckeyes allowed their first rushing TD of the year to Iowa, but limited the Hawkeyes to just 87 yards on the ground.
Bowling Green has very little chance to keep this game competitive, let alone pull off the unimaginable. Expect the Buckeyes to impose their will from the outset, rolling to another blowout victory.
