Undefeated Wake Forest plays host to No. 15 Clemson

(Sports Network) - ACC foes will collide in Winston-Salem this weekend, as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons play host to the 15th-ranked Clemson Tigers. Clemson owns a 4-1 record, as its only setback came in double-overtime on the road to Boston College. The Tigers' most recent triumph occurred last Saturday, as they took a break from their ACC slate to beat up on Louisiana Tech, 51-0. They have now topped 50 points on three occasions already, proof of the explosiveness of their offense. Wake Forest has been a mediocre ACC team at best in recent years, but the Demon Deacons have won their first five games of the 2006 campaign and can qualify for a bowl invitation if they can knock off Clemson. The schedule has clearly been favorable for Wake, as it has failed to play what many fans and analysts would consider a quality opponent. Last weekend, the Deacons rolled to a 34-14 triumph over Liberty, but the level of competition will spike dramatically this weekend. Clemson holds a commanding 54-16-1 advantage in the all-time series with Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons posted a thrilling 31-27 victory in last season's contest.

James Davis got things going for Clemson last Saturday with a 64-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter against Louisiana Tech. Davis then scored again in the second and finished with 143 yards on only 11 carries. Will Proctor, the team's starting quarterback, connected on 5-of-8 passes for 100 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while standout receiver Chansi Stuckey contributed four catches for 100 yards with a score. Unfortunately, Stuckey broke his foot in practice this week and he is expected to miss an unspecified amount of time. Of the 526 total yards that the Tigers racked up against LaTech, 393 came on the ground. Amazingly, they still lost the time of possession battle by more than 10 minutes. There has been plenty of talk about the Heisman Trophy already this season, and James Davis' name is seemingly never mentioned. The tailback plays in a major conference and has 512 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in five games despite carrying the ball only 83 times. The backfield is loaded for Clemson, perhaps the deepest in the nation. Proctor has thrown seven touchdowns against only two interceptions, and Stuckey has 25 grabs for 231 yards with three scores.

Defensively, Clemson was stellar against LaTech last weekend, and there is no greater proof than the final score. Tech finished the contest with a mere 33 rushing yards on 29 attempts, and four sacks by Clemson totaling 29 yards in losses contributed to those stats. Against the pass, the Tigers permitted just a 50 percent completion rating and came up with four big interceptions. Kavell Conner led Clemson in the win with eight total tackles, while Crezdon Butler came up with a pair of interceptions. Heading into the game against Louisiana Tech, the Tigers were only surrendering 78.3 rushing ypg and 234.8 total ypg, so it came as no surprise that they were able to shut down the Bulldogs. Clemson has come up with 14 takeaways in five outings, proof of the big-play ability of this defense.

Wake Forest hasn't exactly excelled on offense thus far, as the team is averaging 23.8 ppg and 317.0 total ypg. Of the 13 touchdowns that the offense has scored, 10 have come on the ground. Micah Andrews still leads the backfield with 256 yards, but he won't be able to add to those stats since he was lost for the season with a knee injury a couple of weeks ago. Andrews leads the club in catches at well with 12. De'Angelo Bryant and Kevin Harris have shared the rushing load in the absence of Andrews, and both have three rushing touchdowns. As for the passing game, freshman Riley Skinner has taken the majority of snaps under center since starter Ben Mauk was likely lost for the season with an elbow injury. Skinner has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 619 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions. Wake racked up 23 first downs and 438 total yards against Liberty last weekend, and Harris posted 77 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just eight attempts. Skinner completed 13-of-21 passes with one touchdown, and Nate Morton had six catches for 127 yards and a touchdown seemingly out of nowhere.

Without question, the strength of this Wake Forest team has been its defense, as the unit is limiting opponents to just 10.6 ppg and 273.0 total ypg. Stopping the run has been the specialty of the group, as foes are only managing 78.2 ypg and 2.2 ypc on the ground against the Demon Deacons. They have eight takeaways, 17 sacks and a tremendous track record on third down. Make no mistake, while the offense has its questions, this defense is legitimate. Jon Abbate is the leading tackler for Wake with 36 total stops, and Bryan Andrews leads the club with seven TFLs, including 3.5 sacks. Sure, Liberty isn't the best of opponents, but the Wake defense still deserves credit for taking care of business last weekend. The Deacs limited the Flames to 301 total yards, including 85 on the ground. Of the two touchdowns scored by Liberty, one came with just over two minutes remaining on the fourth quarter clock. Obviously, the game had long been decided by that point.

Wake Forest managed to knock off Clemson last season, but it has been well over a decade since the Demon Deacons have won back-to-back games in this series. Give the edge to the Tigers, who can get it done on both sides of the ball.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Clemson 31, Wake Forest 20
