Nebraska possesses one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, at the moment, averaging an impressive 42.0 ppg behind 480.2 total ypg. The Huskers are rushing for 202.6 ypg and throwing for an even better 277.6 ypg, with a nearly even split between their 29 total touchdowns scored. Last weekend, Nebraska rolled up 511 total yards, including 395 through the air, in an overtime win over Kansas. Quarterback Zac Taylor accounted for all of the team's passing yards and finished the game with four touchdowns on 15-of-33 pass attempts. He has had quite a season thus far, throwing for 1,276 yards and 12 scores, while completing 63.9 percent of his tosses with just two interceptions. His main target has been Terrence Nunn, who leads the team with 17 catches and 307 receiving yards. Last weekend, Nunn pulled in three balls for 98 yards and a score, while Frantz Hardy came out of nowhere to grab three passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Tailback Marlon Lucky was limited to just 40 yards on 13 carries, but he still leads the team with 405 yards and five touchdowns. Kenny Wilson has provided a nice complement to Lucky and ranks second with 311 rushing yards.
On the defensive side of the ball is where the Huskers have shown sings of stress this season, although that isn't evident in the 15.4 ppg they are allowing. Still, the unit is giving up 321.0 total ypg, including 198.4 ypg through the air. What has helped the defense compensate for some of those yards surrendered is big plays, as Nebraska has forced 13 turnovers thus far. Last weekend, the Huskers were torched for 574 total yards by Kansas, but were able to win the game thanks to four turnovers and a big stand in overtime. Still, the 405 passing yards they allowed in the win has to be cause for concern. Corey McKeon led the Huskers with nine stops and a forced fumble, while Andrew Shanle added six stops and two interceptions. On the year, McKeon heads the club with 30 stops, although he has none of the team's meager total of seven sacks.
Iowa State have been just about average with the ball this season, as it is putting forth 24.0 ppg and 356.6 total ypg after five outings. The team is averaging 113.8 ypg on the ground and a solid 242.8 ypg through the air, with eight rushing touchdowns and seven passing to its credit. Last weekend, the Cyclones posted 404 yards of total offense which helped overcome three costly turnovers in a one-point win over Northern Iowa. Despite throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown, quarterback Bret Meyer had a solid game, connecting on 24-of-29 pass attempts for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Meyer has completed an efficient 63.1 percent of his throws this season for 1,186 yards with seven touchdowns against four interceptions. He has also been dangerous with his legs, rushing for 152 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. Spreading out the ball has also been a strength of Meyer's, as three different Cyclone wideouts have caught at least 19 passes this season. Last weekend, it was Jon Davis' turn to shine, as he pulled in seven balls for 117 yards, including the game-winning 16-yard touchdown with just over a minute remaining in regulation. As for the ground game, Stevie Hicks leads the way with 363 yards and two scores on 78 attempts.
Defensively, the Cyclones have had their share of problems this season and are currently giving up 28.8 ppg and 377.4 total ypg. The unit has really struggled against the pass (252.6 ypg), while allowing 124.8 ypg on the ground. Forcing turnovers has also been a problem for Iowa State, which has just six takeaways thus far. Despite winning last weekend's game, the Cyclones' defense appeared rather shaky, allowing 334 total yards, including 176 on the ground to a I-AA team in Northern Iowa. The unit also failed to record a single turnover in the game, and came up with just one sack. Tyrone McKenzie did all he could for the defense by posting 16 tackles, while Alvin Bowen added 15 stops of his own. On the year, Bowen ranks among the top tacklers in the nation with 69 stops in just five games.
The Huskers' offense has been sensational this season and should continue to shine this weekend against an Iowa State club that has had trouble slowing down its opponents. Expect a big game from Taylor, as he leads Nebraska to its first road win of the season.
