NC State upsets Seminoles

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Daniel Evans completed 13-of-22 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter in his second career start, to lead North Carolina State over No. 17 Florida State, 24-20, in a key ACC battle at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Andre Brown rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries for the Wolfpack (3-2, 2-0 ACC), who won their second straight. Geron James caught four passes for 91 yards and a score. Donald Bowens added 29 yards on a pair of catches with a touchdown.

Drew Weatherford completed 16-of-29 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Seminoles (3-2, 1-2), who have dropped two of three. Lorenzo Booker rushed for 58 yards on 14 carries and caught four balls for 105 yards. Brandon Warren had 47 receiving yards on five catches.

The Wolfpack edged a 24-20 lead on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Evans to John Dunlap, capping an eight-play, 58-yard drive.

After forcing Florida State to punt, they got into field-goal range on the FSU 30. However, an offensive pass interference call bumped the ball back to the 45, where the Wolfpack were then forced to punt.

Florida State drove down to the NC State 39, but DaJuan Morgan picked off a Weatherford pass to curtail any chance for a comeback. The Wolfpack ran out the clock thereafter to preserve the victory.

Florida State opened the scoring with a Gary Cismesia 25-yard field goal midway through the first, capping a nine-play, 51-yard drive, for the only points scored in the quarter.

Evans got comfortable down the first-quarter stretch. He found James for 30 yards and 27 yards before hooking up with Bowens for a 16-yard touchdown with 11:57 left in the second.

Cismesia kept the Seminoles close on a 20-yard field goal early in the second for a 7-6 deficit. They took the lead on a one-play drive consisting of a 33- yard touchdown pass from Weatherford to Chris Davis with 3:12 left before halftime.

NC State put up three points on a John Deraney 22-yard field goal with 1:48 on the first-half clock for a 13-10 FSU halftime advantage. The Wolfpack blew an opportunity for a touchdown when Toney Baker got stuffed for no gain, inches from the goal line on fourth down with 9:36 on the third-quarter clock.

The Seminoles made them pay by driving the ball 99 yards on 14 plays for a 12- yard touchdown pass caught by Warren with just over three minutes left in the third.

NC State stayed close, as Evans got the cornerback to bite on a pump fake and found James in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown with just 16 seconds left in the third and a 20-17 deficit.

Game Notes

Brown rushed for more than 100 yards against FSU for the second year in a row, after a 179-yard performance last season. He became the 21st player in school history to reach 1,000 rushing yards, and the eighth quickest to do so needing only 16 games to reach the mark...FSU linebacker Derek Nicholson left with two minutes remaining in the first because of a torn ACL, and will miss the rest of the season...The Wolfpack trail 18-9 in the all-time series, but have won four of the last six matchups, including a 20-15 victory in Tallahassee a year ago.
