Tate, Hawkeyes rout Boilermakers

Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Drew Tate threw for 253 yards, Damian Sims added 155 on the ground with two touchdowns and 19th-ranked Iowa cruised past Purdue, 47-17, at Kinnick Stadium.

It turned out that the Boilermakers defense was exactly what the doctor ordered for an Iowa offense that looked shaky in primetime against top-ranked Ohio State last Saturday night.

Shonn Greene added 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground, as the Hawkeyes (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) accumulated 286 yards on the ground. Dominique Douglas hauled in four passes for 90 yards in the win.

Purdue (4-2, 1-1) fell behind 27-3 in the third quarter before mounting some offense the rest of the way. Curtis Painter finished 22-of-46 for 249 yards with one score and two interceptions, while Kory Sheets added 73 yards on the ground.

After the Hawkeyes fumbled on their first series, Tate took over on the second march. The crafty signal-caller completed both of his passes for 29 yards on the march, and Sims punched it in from one yard out for a 7-0 lead.

After Chris Summers missed a 48-yard field goal for the Boilermakers, the rest of the period was the Tate show. The veteran was 5-of-6 on the next series, threading the needle to Tom Busch on a two-yard scoring pass to put the Hawkeyes up 14-0 with 2:29 left in the period.

Kyle Schlicher then drilled a 39-yard field goal following an early second- quarter Painter interception for a 17-0 lead.

Schlicher split the uprights again, this time from 27 yards out, to make the score 20-0 with only 24 ticks remaining in the half.

Purdue finally got on the scoreboard following a 48-yard kickoff return by Dorien Bryant. Summers was true on the field goal this time from 44 yards away to trim the deficit to 20-3 as the half expired.

Tate's 21-yard connection to Douglas spearheaded a TD march that turned the game into a rout. Sims dashed for 11 and 12 yards on consecutive plays before he knifed through the defense for an eight-yard scoring run and a 27-3 advantage.

Purdue didn't quit, however, as Painter capped an impressive five-play, 81- yard march with an 18-yard TD pass to Greg Orton.

The Hawkeyes kept pouring it on, as they responded with an eight-play, 91-yard TD drive. Tate found tight end Scott Chandler for the four-yard score and a 34-10 game with 7:20 remaining in the period.

The back-and-forth scoring spree continued when Purdue drove 76 yards for another touchdown. Jaycen Taylor ended the march with a 16-yard TD run for a 34-17 game.

Greene's four-yard touchdown run in the fourth gave Iowa a 40-17 lead, and Adam Shada sprinted 98 yards on an interception return with 7:54 left for the final margin.

Game Notes

Purdue still leads the all-time series 44-32-3. Iowa won the meeting last year in West Lafayette, 34-17...The Hawkeyes head to Bloomington to face Indiana next Saturday, while Purdue travels to Evanston to face Northwestern...Taylor finished with 63 yards on eight carries...Bryant had six catches for 96 yards in the loss.
