Slaton, Mountaineers top Bulldogs

Starkville, MS (Sports Network) - Steve Slaton rushed for 185 yards and a score while quarterback Pat White added a pair of rushing touchdowns, as fourth-ranked West Virginia ran past Mississippi State, 42-14, at Davis Wade Stadium.

White ran for 76 yards and added 92 passing yards on 6-of-9 throwing for the Mountaineers (5-0), who increased the nation's second longest winning streak to 12 games.

Owen Schmitt also rushed for two touchdowns and Darius Reynaud made two catches for 41 yards as West Virginia won its eighth straight road contest.

In all, the Mountaineers held a 323-54 edge in rushing yardage.

"He ran hard," West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez said of Slaton. "He had some nice runs and some big plays. The offensive line did a good job. (Mississippi State has) been pretty good against the run against some pretty good teams. It was important for us to establish the run."

Omarr Conner completed 10-of-19 passes for 135 yards with a touchdown pass and was sacked four times for the Bulldogs (1-5), who have lost two straight. Tony Burks made four catches for 118 yards with a touchdown reception.

"It is obvious that we played much better offensively, but ultimately this game comes down to is how we did not tackle well through the course of the ballgame, namely the stretch of the game where we needed to make stands," said Bulldogs head coach Sylvester Croom. "We were somewhat overwhelmed by the speed they had, but I think that our kids played tough and gave them a battle."

After Adam Carlson missed a 48-yard field goal wide right on Mississippi State's game-opening drive, Reynaud quickly moved West Virginia up the field on a counter attack.

On the march's second play, Reynaud broke off a 25-yard run to move the Mountaineers across midfield. Two plays later, White found Reynaud for a 37- yard completion to the Bulldog five and Schmitt rumbled into the end zone on the next play to make it 7-0 with 8:11 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs' next drive eventually ended with a punt and the Mountaineers put together an eight-play, 75-yard sequence that bridged the first and second quarter and ended with White's six-yard touchdown run 48 seconds into the quarter.

"Pat White understands the game of football as good as any quarterback I've ever had," Rodriguez said. "I'm talking about understanding the situation, where the first down is. People say we don't throw much. It's not because of Pat White. Pat White can make all the throws."

Mississippi State found the end zone before the half as Conner nailed Burks for a 40-yard touchdown pass with just over one minute remaining in the second quarter.

"I have been working hard and I knew I was bound to have a game like this," Burks said. "I was able to make some plays and hopefully I can build on that."

West Virginia moved its lead to 21-7 on its opening march of the third frame. Slaton opened the march with runs of 12 and 15 yards to get things moving and the back culminated the drive with an 11-yard scamper into the end zone 4:38 into the stanza.

The score was Slaton's 24th rushing touchdown in 12 games.

Bobby Hathaway intercepted Mike Henig deep in his own territory and White capped the ensuing possession with a 46-yard touchdown run with 8:02 left in the fourth.

The Bulldogs cut their deficit in half at 28-14 with 5:31 left in the game as Anthony Dixon found the end zone from one yard out.

However, West Virginia scored twice more before the game's conclusion. First, Schmitt ran in from five yards out with 3:02 remaining and less than two minutes later, Vaughn Rivers returned a punt 50 yards to the end zone to make it 42-14.

Game Notes

Henig completed 7-of-15 passes for 115 yards with two picks in relief of Conner...Dixon ended with 15 yards rushing on nine carries while Ami Stallworth had 41 yards on the ground in defeat...Schmitt rushed for 28 yards...Mississippi State outgained West Virginia 261-92 through the air...West Virginia hosts Syracuse next week while the Bulldogs welcome Jacksonville State.
