Reggie Ball completed 13-of-25 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast), who won their fifth straight. Calvin Johnson caught 10 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.
"A game like that, it was very emotional game," Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey said. "They know, those guys in there know that they didn't play their best. We were very fortunate to win the football game, and it says a lot about our character in my opinion."
Sam Hollenbach completed 16-of-24 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Terrapins (3-2, 0-1), who have lost two of three. Lance Ball rushed for 116 yards on 23 attempts. Darrius Heyward-Bey caught five passes for 111 yards, and Jason Goode added 33 receiving yards.
Trailing 23-21, the Jackets' defense set up the offense as KaMichael Hall recovered a Lance Ball fumble at the Maryland 17, and Choice needed two tries to run it in with 10:10 on the clock. Tech failed a two-point conversion attempt for a 27-23 lead.
Maryland's attempt to regain control was abruptly cut short, as Kenny Scott intercepted a Hollenbach pass on 4th-and-2 and returned it to the Tech 38.
Georgia Tech failed to safeguard its lead, as Travis Bell missed a 31-yard field-goal attempt off the left upright. Maryland made Tech pay when Heyward- Bey broke free on a 57-yard pass play.
The Yellow Jackets defense held on to preserve the victory. After starting the drive at the seven, Maryland had a 3rd-and-goal at the four-yard line. But, Hollenbach got sacked by Michael Johnson for a loss of 15 yards and got called for intentional grounding on the play. Hollenbach then got sacked by Johnson again for a loss of eight yards to end the game.
"I thought our kids played hard, but you can't turn the ball over, and when you have guys open, you've got to hit them," Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen said. "You've got to take advantage of plays when they're there. Especially when you've got the ball down there at the end, and I feel we've got a pretty good running team, but they did a good job of stopping the run."
Georgia Tech got going first, marching 79 yards on 10 plays capped by a 10- yard touchdown pass from Reggie Ball to Johnson with just under 11 minutes to go in the first.
Maryland answered right back on the ensuing kickoff. Josh Wilson caught the ball in the end zone, hugged the left sideline, and sliced back all the way through the middle for a 104-yard touchdown and a tie score, 7-7, just 20 seconds later.
After Tech punted, Maryland drove the ball all the way down to the Tech one- yard line, but Hollenbach got stuffed on third down, forcing Dan Ennis to put up an 18-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead with 1:46 remaining.
The Terps started to pull away in the second, after Johnson fumbled and Marcus Wimbush returned it to the Tech eight as the first quarter ended. Joey Haynos then capped a simple three-play, eight-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown catch from Hollenbach with 13:33 left in the second.
The Yellow Jackets responded with an eight-play, 67-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown scamper by Choice with 9:12 remaining in the second.
The Terps had their luck abruptly halted when a deep catch by Isaiah Williams, originally ruled complete, got overturned upon official review. Instead of Maryland having the ball in Georgia Tech territory, they were forced to punt away.
Maryland took a 20-14 lead into halftime after a career-long 46-yarder by Ennis with a tick under a minute left before the intermission. Ennis then put the Terps up, 23-14, on a 32-yarder with just over three minutes left in the third for the only points scored in the stanza.
Georgia Tech kept it close, 23-21, as Ball found a hole en route to the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run with 11:33 left in the fourth, capping a seven-play, 62-yard drive.
Game Notes
Georgia Tech owns a 13-5 lead in the all-time series with Maryland, and the Yellow Jackets have won the last three meetings.
