John David Booty completed 23-of-40 passes for 243 yards and threw one touchdown and an interception for the Trojans (5-0, 3-0 Pac-10), who extended their home winning streak to 29 games and won their 26th straight conference matchup.
Chauncey Washington rushed for 81 yards on 17 carries, and Emmanuel Moody also added 67 yards on the ground. Steve Smith added 96 yards receiving and made a TD catch in the win.
Mario Danelo was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals for the Trojans.
A last-ditch effort by Washington fell short when the game clock ran out. Isaiah Stanback led his team down the field and a 20-yard completion to Sonny Shackelford got the Huskies all the way to the USC 15 with two seconds left. Then, with no timeouts remaining, the officials blew the whistle to start the clock and Washington did not snap the ball before time expired.
"It's a difficult situation to officiate," said Washington coach Tyrone Willingham. "If the officials move too fast, are they favoring the University of Washington? If they move slower, is it for USC? They are trying to keep the same rhythm. We just needed a few more seconds."
Stanback threw for 212 yards on 17-of-38 passing with two TDs for Washington (4-2, 2-1), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Shackelford hauled in nine passes for 125 yards and Johnie Kirton hauled in a touchdown pass for the Huskies. Kenny James rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries.
After a tight first half that saw USC ahead 17-10, the Huskies were determined to make something happen, opening the second half by recovering an on-side kick.
Washington then caught the USC defense on their heels on the very next play. Marlon Wood exploded down the left sideline on a reverse, good for a 46-yard gain to give the Huskies a 1st-and-10 on the Trojans six-yard line. Louis Ranken had an opportunity to punch it in on three consecutive plays, but he fumbled on third down and recovered his own mistake, leaving Washington to settle for a Michael Braunstein field goal to make it 17-13.
USC upped its lead again on the next possession, going 63 yards in just over three minutes. The scoring drive ended when Danelo connected from 25 yards to make it 20-13.
The Trojans went back to the air after a Washington punt. Booty hit Smith for an eight-yard gain, but was picked off by the Huskies' Scott White on the very next play. Drew Radovich was also hit with a personal foul, giving Washington the ball on its own 32.
The Huskies' offense couldn't capitalize, and Sean Douglas' punt attempt was blocked four plays later, recovered by USC's Brian Cushing. Five plays later, Danelo connected again with his third field goal of the game, this one from 32 yards, to make it 23-13 with 4:11 remaining in the third.
Washington kept hope alive heading into the final quarter. Stanback capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive that started on the Huskies 27 by connecting with Kirton on a six-yard pass over the middle. The score trimmed USC's lead to three with 10:06 left in the contest and stunned the capacity crowd of 90,282 at the Coliseum.
USC's offense answered the bell on its final possession, running 5:21 off the game clock and marching 76 yards before Danelo chipped in a 21-yard field goal to give the Trojans a 26-20 lead.
"The first half was pretty good," said Moody. We only had the ball three times and came away with two touchdowns and a field goal. There are some plays to be made out there, some times we made them and sometimes we didn't."
The Trojans opened the scoring on their first possession, putting together a 96-yard drive that moved the chains five times. They almost lost the ball and some early momentum when Moody fumbled at the Washington 30 after a nine-yard run, but Booty jumped on the ball to maintain possession. Two plays later, USC was faced with a 4th-and-9 situation, but Michael McDonald, in his only play of the game under center, hit Smith with the 20-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.
The Huskies came right back with a 14-play, 71-yard drive that ended on a 26- yard field goal by Braunstein with two seconds left in the first quarter.
USC struck again in the second, marching 79 yards for the score when Turner hauled in a 17-yard pass from Booty to find the end zone and put Southern California up 14-3.
Washington again had an answer though. With 4:17 left in the first half, Stanback hooked up with James for a six-yard TD connection to make it a four- point game.
The Trojans offense exploded again on the subsequent kickoff. CJ Gable had a 34-yard return before he was ruled out of bounds. USC then put together a 14- play, 45-yard drive that they thought resulted in a touchdown, but Kyle Williams was hit with a 10-yard penalty for holding. A 34-yard Danelo field goal attempt split the uprights, putting Southern California back in front by seven.
Game Notes
USC scored 20-plus points in its 57th straight game...The Trojans hold a commanding 47-26-4 series advantage over the Huskies...Washington is 10-28 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
