Look out America, here comes California
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - California was ranked number nine in the preseason AP poll but fell fast after losing its opener at Tennessee, 35-18. However, the Golden Bears have reeled off five wins in a row, culminating with a 45-24 stomping of previously unbeaten Oregon.The Bears have covered every lined contest since the loss to the Vols and are lighting up the scoreboard in the process so. They have scored over 40 points in their last five and went over the total in three of four (no total versus Portland State).
With USC struggling to win games each week, California has overtaken the Trojans as the most talented team in the Pac 10. Southern Cal keeps on chugging along at 5-0 but has failed to cover all three of its conference games. The once-vaunted offensive attack led by Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush has been a shell of its former self.
The Trojans' lowest point total in 2005 was 34, and they have failed to reach that number in each of their last four games. The "under" has been the right side in three of their last four, with the Washington State game being the only contest going over the total.
Speaking of the Cougars, they have the dubious task of taking on the Golden Bears in Pullman on Saturday, although they have covered six of the last seven meetings at home.
Wash State led Cal 38-28 with the ball midway through the fourth quarter in last seasons game, only to fall 42-38. The Bears Joseph Ayoob threw two TD passes in the final 5:19 to pull out the victory. It was the third straight time that these two teams combined to score over 70 points, and expect another shootout here.
TROUBLES FOR AUBURN
The only team that dropped out of my Top 10 was Auburn. The Tigers were blitzed by Arkansas at home, 27-10. Auburn has scored a grand total of 75 points in four SEC games for an average of 18.8 per contest, and unless the offense can regain last seasons form of 33 ppg in conference play, the Tigers definitely will lose a couple of more games this year.
They have failed to cover three consecutive games and have gone under the total in four of their last five. They better get their act together quickly with Florida coming to town this Saturday.
The undefeated Gators still have a few roadblocks left with games vs. Georgia, South Carolina and Florida State still on the schedule. However, they are better than all of those teams, so this contest is the make or break game for Urban Meyers club.
Florida has handled Auburn fairly easily through the years, winning eight of the last nine meetings while covering seven. The Gators have a bye week after this game and are 12-5 ATS since 1995 in the contest prior to the bye.
Despite Floridas offensive capabilities, the team has gone under the total in five of its six games this year. The reason? A tremendous defense ranked second in the country in total points allowed at 9.5 ppg. The Gators have allowed only one rushing TD all year and lead the SEC in run defense, giving up only 57 yards per game for a conference-best 2.3 average.
The last time the Tigers lost two straight SEC home games was back in 1999, Tommy Tubervilles first season coaching Auburn. However, considering the way both teams have played this year, I can't see Auburn winning this game.
Take Florida and the under.
OTHER PLAYS
One team is undefeated and in the Top 25, while the other did not even get a vote in the latest AP poll. The latter squad is 5-1 with its only loss coming in overtime by one point due to a blocked extra point attempt. The match-up is, of course, Rutgers at Navy, and the right team is favored, albeit by less than it should.
The Midshipmen opened as two-point favorites and the line has since dropped to one. The Mids are coming off two straight road wins, including a tremendous effort vs. Air Force last week. They led the Falcons 24-10 with just over three minutes left when Air Force scored to make the final score closer than the game was.
Rutgers has yet to play a team of any consequence and almost lost to South Florida on the road in its last contest. The Scarlet Knights dominate teams with their ferocious ground game, but since the Mids run the option, their defense sees 95% running plays in practice and will be ready for the Knights' rushing attack.
Don't look for Rutgers quarterback Mike Teel to light up Navy either. The sophomore has thrown only two TD passes this season as opposed to six interceptions. This game won't be like last years contest when the Knights defeated the Mids, 31-21. Ryan Hart was Rutgers quarterback in that game, and he tore up Navys secondary for 221 yards on 18 of 21 passing.
Navy held Ray Rice to 80 yards rushing but couldn't contain Hart and the Rutgers passing attack. Three Midshipmen turnovers didn't help the cause either.
Take Navy to win by double digits.
Tulsa barely got by Navy in overtime a few weeks back but beat Southern Miss in its last contest, 20-6. The Hurricane outgained the Eagles, 453 to 243, but kept Southern Miss in the game with 12 penalties for over 100 yards.
Tulsas pass defense leads the nation, allowing only 577 yards in five games. the strength of the East Carolina offense is the passing game, as the Pirates are averaging 260 yards per game through the air. EC is only 2-3 on the season, with the two wins coming over Memphis and Virginia, who are a combined 3-8.
The Golden Hurricane had an extra week to prepare for the Pirates and are 4-2 SU and ATS against them in six all-time meetings. Tulsa is 6-3 SU on the road since 05 and an amazing 8-1 ATS, including 3-0 as a road favorite.
Go with Tulsa by at least a touchdown.
In other action, take Iowa State, Kansas State and Arizona State plus the points vs. Oklahoma, Nebraska and USC, respectively.
