Surprising Razorbacks host Redhawks

(Sports Network) - In the top-25 for the first time this season, the 17th- ranked Arkansas Razorbacks welcome the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks to Fayetteville this weekend. Houston Nutt's Razorbacks went into Auburn last weekend and destroyed the former second-ranked team in the country, 27-10, propelling the team into the national rankings. After dropping the season-opener to USC, Arkansas has won four straight and has begun SEC play 3-0 for the first time since 1998. SEMO is playing just its 12th I-A opponent since joining the I-AA ranks in 1991. The Redhawks re 1-10 in the previous 11 matchups. This season, SEMO is 3-2 on the year, 1-2 in OVC play. Last week, the Redhawks were shut out by Eastern Illinois, 21-0, the team's second loss in the last three games. Arkansas won the only previous meeting between these two teams, a 12-0 victory a century ago (1906).

SEMO's offense can be regarded as a one-trick pony. The team is netting a respectable 153.0 yards per game rushing, but the passing attack has been non- existent, managing a mere 93.8 yards per game. Sustaining drives has obviously been problematic, with the Redhawks converting just 30 percent of their third- down attempts. Quarterbacks Kevin Ballatore and Markus Mosley have struggled in the passing game and it is no surprise that the team lacks any real threats in the vertical game. Clint Jones paces the group in receptions, with only 12 on the year. Tailbacks John Radney and Tim Holloman have been the only real bright spot on this side of the football. Radney is averaging 4.7 ypc, while Holloman nets 5.5 ypc. The pair have combined for 562 yards and seven of the team's 10 rushing TDs. Holloman has been hampered by an ankle injury and is questionable for this contest.

The Redhawk defense has been better than the offense, despite allowing good chunks of yardage on the ground and through the air. In all, the team is yielding 360.2 yards of offense per game. Still, senior end Edgar Jones is a real force along the line and is one of the top pass rushers in the I-AA ranks. Of his 27 total tackles, 11 have come behind the line of scrimmage, including nine sacks (leads the nation). Junior linebacker Adam Casper is another standout on this side of the football, ranking 13th nationally in tackles per game (10.6). Casper has amassed 53 stops on the year, with four TFLs, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

The maturation of freshman QB Mitch Mustain is one of the real reasons for Arkansas' current winning streak. With the victory over Auburn, Mustain has become the first true freshman in school history to win his first four starts. Mustain isn't asked to do much with his arm, as he has completed 53.3 percent of his passes, for 574 yards with six TDs. His top target is Marcus Monk (15 receptions, for 327 yards and three TDs). It has certainly helped Mustain to have a lethal rushing attack. The Razorbacks are one of the better rushing teams in the nation, churning out 206 yards per game (11th nationally). All- American candidate Darren McFadden leads the charge, averaging 110 yards per game. McFadden is netting 5.5 yards per carry and has scored four TDs. He gets help from Felix Jones, who is averaging a gaudy 8.2 ypc in spot duty.

The Razorbacks had a brilliant defensive gameplan against Auburn last week and really took it to the Tigers. On the season, the numbers haven't been that impressive, especially against the run (149.0 ypg). Still, the pass defense has been downright nasty, with the team holding foes to a mere 182.8 ypg. An area of real concern for this defense has been the team's lack of takeaways. Through five games, the Razorbacks have forced just one turnover, that being a fumble recovery. Senior linebacker Sam Olajubutu has been the leader of the Arkansas defense for some time. He posted his fifth double-digit tackle performance of the season against Auburn with 14 stops. He currently leads the team with 66 total tackles and ranks 11th in school history in stops (323). Sophomore rush end Antwain Robinson is the player to watch up front. The 6-5, 255-pounder leads the team in TFLs (6.5) and sacks (5.5).

The Razorbacks are off to a wonderful start in the SEC and should be a factor down the stretch in-conference. A letdown game could be expected after knocking off Auburn, but a lack of competition in the form of SEMO will prevent that from happening this weekend.
