The Bearcats lack some punch on the offensive side of things and that is evident in the mere 18.3 ppg the team is currently averaging. The main reason for the low output has been mistakes, as the Bearcats have committed 15 turnovers already, including nine interceptions. Last weekend, the Bearcats turned the ball over three teams, but were able to overcome the mistakes by racking up 424 total yards in a win over Akron. It was a solid showing by Cincinnati, which is averaging only 313.2 total ypg thus far. Quarterback Dustin Grutza did it all for the Bearcats last weekend, he threw for 230 yards and a score, in addition to rushing for a team-high 72 yards on 12 carries. Grutza has started all six games for the Bearcats this season and has completed 65.4 percent of his throws for 984 yards and five scores. However, he has been prone to making mistakes, as evident by his eight interceptions. Grutza's top target has been Brent Celek, who leads the team with 21 receptions and 266 receiving yards. Last weekend, Celek pulled in four passes for 60 yards and his first touchdown of the year. As for the ground game, there is no one clear threat for the Bearcats, as no player has rushed for over 300 yards this season, although three have rushed for more than 150.
Defensively, Cincinnati has done a solid job in holding its foes to 20.5 ppg and 304.8 total ypg this season. The unit has excelled against the run and has limited its opponents to only 91.0 ypg on the ground and just four touchdowns. Last weekend, the Bearcats were at their best, holding Akron to just 219 yards of total offense, including a mere 36 rushing. The unit allowed only 10 first downs in the game, in addition to posting two sacks. Haruki Nakamura posted five stops in the win, giving him a team-high 34 for the year. Another player worth noting is Dominic Ross, who has already picked off three passes this season to lead the Bearcats.
The Bearcats' defense better be ready this Saturday, as they are facing a Louisville attack which leads the nation in both scoring (44.0 ppg) and total yards (523.6 ypg). The Cardinals can beat their opponents on the ground (236.8 ypg) or through the air (286.8 ypg), and rarely make any mistakes, with just eight turnovers thus far. Louisville has done much of this damage without two of its star players in running back Michael Bush and quarterback Brian Brohm. Bush broke his leg in the team's opener and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, while Brohm is listed as questionable for Saturday's game after dislocating his finger against Miami-Florida a few games ago. Hunter Cantwell has filled in nicely for Brohm under center and is coming off his best game in a 44-17 win over Middle Tennessee. In that game, Cantwell helped the Cardinals roll up 526 yards of total offense by throwing for a career-best 340 yards and three touchdowns. It was a spectacular effort by Cantwell, who has completed 63.8 percent of his pass attempts this season for 692 yards and five touchdowns. Mario Urrutia didn't seem to mind that a different quarterback was throwing him the ball, as he pulled in four passes for 134 yards and a pair of scores last weekend. The 6-6 Urrutia leads the Cardinals with 405 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the season. As for the team's ground attack, which has scored an eye-popping 19 touchdowns this season, it revolves around a committee of backs that is led by George Stripling and Kolby Smith. The duo have done a nice job to fill the void left by the injured Bush, having combined for 585 yards and nine scores thus far.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cardinals have been every bit as good as their offense this season, allowing a mere 11.6 ppg and just 265.8 total ypg. The unit has been especially tough against the run (58.6 ypg), and has also done a solid job in sacking opposing quarterbacks 15 times. The only knock on this unit is that it hasn't generated enough big plays, with just eight forced turnovers to its credit. In the team's last game, the Cardinals' defense was solid once again, limiting Middle Tennessee to just 10 points and only 250 total yards in an easy win. The unit recorded only one turnover and one sack in the game, but didn't give much ground to Middle Tennessee. Lamar Myles led the charge with 13 stops, while Malik Jackson added three TFLs and one sack. On the year, Myles leads the Cardinals with just 22 stops, including 16 solo.
This is just a complete mismatch, as the Cardinals are clearly the better team on both sides of the ball. Louisville has been unbeatable at home of late and behind its powerful offense it should be able to put this one away early.
