The Knights are one of the top rushing teams in the nation at the moment, as they are averaging a healthy 208.2 ypg on the ground with 15 touchdowns. The team's success on the ground has helped it to average 31.2 ppg, and overshadow the mere 123.0 ypg it is throwing for. In the squad's last game, Rutgers racked up 226 of its 326 total yards on the ground in a 22-20 victory over USF. Ray Rice, once again led the way, rushing for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 35 attempts. It was the seventh straight 100-yard rushing game by Rice, who ranks second in the nation with 806 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns thus far. With Rice running the show, quarterback Mike Teel hasn't been counted on much. For the year, Teel has completed 56.2 percent of his mere 96 pass attempts with just two touchdowns against six interceptions. His numbers may not look too good, but Teel has done a solid job managing the offense. Fullback Brian Leonard has been his primary outlet, as he leads the team with 19 receptions and 169 receiving yards.
Defensively, the Knights have been dominant for the most part this season, holding their opponents to only 10.0 ppg and a mere 233.4 total ypg. The unit has fared well against the run (73.8 ppg) as well as the pass (159.6 ypg), and has also forced 16 turnovers, including nine interceptions. In the team's prior outing, Rutgers forced three turnovers which helped compensate for the 347 yards of total offense it allowed in a victory over USF. Ron Girault and Courtney Greene led the way for the Knights with five stops and an interception apiece. Greene now leads the team with 30 stops and three interceptions on the season.
The Mids' offense revolves around an option style of attack and because of that they rank as the top rushing (350.5 ypg) team in the nation, but one of the worst passing (54.5 ypg). Of the team's 21 touchdowns scored this season, only two have come through the air. Last weekend, Navy threw for just eight yards, but rushed for 317 in a 24-17 victory over Air Force. Adam Ballard led the way, as he rushed for 134 yards on 27 totes. Ballard currently ranks second on the team in rushing (574), trailing only quarterback Brian Hampton, who has 645 yards and 10 touchdowns to his credit. Last weekend, Hampton carried 22 times for 105 yards and a pair of scores, although he completed just 1-of-5 pass attempts for eight yards and an interception. Hampton has only thrown for 302 yards this season, but has more than made up for it with his running ability.
On the defensive side of the ball is where Navy still needs to establish some sort of identity. Currently, the Mids are allowing 18.3 ppg to their opponents, who have been able to gain 129.7 ypg on the ground and 220.0 ypg through the air against them. Getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks has been a concern for the team thus far, as Navy has just 10 sacks to its credit. Last weekend however, the Mids posted a season-best five sacks, in addition to holding Air Force to 312 total yards in a victory. David Mahoney put forth a tremendous effort in the win, as he posted nine tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble. Rob Caldwell, the team's leading tackler (53) this season, got into the mix as well with nine stops, a forced fumble and his first sack of the year.
This should be an interesting game, as both clubs rely heavily on their ground attacks to win games. Rutgers however, has the better defense of the two and that is what should make the biggest difference in a close win this Saturday.
