Kevin Challenger caught three passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles (5-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their second straight. Ryan Thompson caught three balls for 38 yards, and L.V. Whitworth rushed for 60 yards on 17 carries. Walk-on Steve Aponavicius kicked a pair of field goals and a pair of PATs in his first-ever football game at any level.
"The entire atmosphere was run, every minute of it," Aponavicius said. "I just wanted to go out and enjoy it. I wasn't really nervous, and I just tried to go out there and do my best for the team. I never thought I would be kicking in a big game. My only hope when I tried out was that I would make the team. I had no idea I would be kicking in a game like this."
Sean Glennon completed 23-of-34 passes for 148 yards with two interceptions for the Hokies (4-2, 1-2), who lost their second straight. Branden Ore rushed for 71 yards on 19 carries. Eddie Royal caught five passes for 44 yards.
After leading 7-3 at halftime, a pair of Tech turnovers in the third quarter set up a pair of Boston College field goals by Aponavicius.
Glennon was originally bailed out when an apparent fumble was overturned after an official review found that the quarterback's arm was moving forward on the play.
However, on the very next play, Glennon threw an interception caught by Jolonn Dunbar, who returned it 31 yards to the Tech 27. Aponavicius followed with his first-ever field goal, a 36-yarder that put the Eagles ahead, 10-3 with 9:11 on the clock.
Glennon's troubles continued when he got blindsided by Austin Giles, who knocked the ball loose and Alex Albright recovered it at the Tech 30. The Eagles got to the three-yard line but the Hokies defense contained the rush at the goal line, and BC settled for a 20-yard field goal by Aponavicius and a 10-point lead with just under five minutes left.
"I thought Boston College played well and took advantage of turnovers," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "I'd say we'd need to evaluate our football team and how we're doing what we're doing because two weeks in a row turnovers in the third quarter got us. We have to determine what type of team we are and I know it's hard to win football games when you turn the ball over."
The Hokies started to rally when Glennon ran for seven yards on a 3rd-and-4 on the opening play of the fourth quarter. However a holding penalty and a Mark Herzlich sack caused a 4th-and-28. After the punt, Boston College put the game out of reach with 6:49 left in the fourth. The Eagles marched 83 yards on 11 plays capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ryan to a wide-open Challenger after a breakdown in the Tech secondary.
The Eagles placed the dagger in Tech by scoring a safety on a muffed punt, as the ball was snapped out of the end zone, with 1:37 to play for the final margin.
After a scoreless first quarter, Boston College's defense set up the offense, as a Glennon pass got picked off by Ryan Glasper. The Eagles took possession and drove 54 yards on six plays capped by a 15-yard touchdown catch by Challenger with 5:11 left in the second.
Tech drove the ball 51 yards on 14 plays but had to settle for a 36-yard Brandon Pace field goal in the final minute, after a completed pass to a wide- open David Clowney in the end zone had been called back because of a holding penalty.
Game Notes
The Hokies had just 21 second-half yards, and failed to score a touchdown for the first time since the 1998 Gator Bowl...Beamer coached his 300th career game (232 at Tech, 67 at Murray State) as a head coach...The game was the 13th between Tech and Boston College. The Hokies hold a 9-4 advantage in the series after a 30-10 victory last year in Blacksburg...The Hokies own a 5-2 record at Alumni Stadium, but had a three- game winning streak on Thursday night games against the Eagles (1998, 2002 and 2005) come to an end.
