Peterson and Oklahoma rout Iowa State

Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Adrian Peterson racked up 228 all-purpose yards and scored twice to guide No. 23 Oklahoma past Iowa State, 34-9, in the Sooners' Big 12 home opener.

Peterson rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries and added three catches for 45 yards for Oklahoma (4-2, 1-1 Big 12), which was coming off a 28-10 loss at the hands of Texas.

Signal-caller Paul Thompson finished 16-of-27 for 195 yards with a pair of touchdown passes, both of which went to Malcolm Kelly.

Bret Meyer, meanwhile, went 14-of-25 for 149 yards with a TD toss and two interceptions for the Cyclones (3-4, 0-3), who have dropped four of their last five contests. Todd Blythe had three receptions for 60 yards and a score, while Stevie Hicks led the rushing attack with 83 yards on 13 carries.

The Sooners wasted no time taking command, as they needed just four plays on their opening possession to find the end zone. Peterson broke off a 40-yard run on second down to move his team deep into enemy territory, then scored one play later on a five-yard scamper off the left side.

The home team then marched 65 yards on eight plays on their next possession, which was capped by a nine-yard TD pass from Thompson to Kelly with 5:08 remaining in the opening quarter.

Meyer quickly countered with a 31-yard TD strike to Blythe on the Cyclones' ensuing drive, but the Sooners lashed back with 10 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 24-7 lead into intermission.

Garrett Hartley made it a 10-point game with a 47-yard field goal with 12:47 left in the half that polished off a 10-play, 31-yard drive.

Peterson got the Oklahoma offense moving again late in the second quarter, coming through with receptions of 18 and 31 yards, respectively, to put the Sooners in striking distance. Thompson then hooked up with Kelly for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds on the clock.

Peterson coughed up the ball in the end zone early in the third quarter, and with the defense bearing down on him after he picked it back up, opted to toss it out of the end zone for the safety.

Iowa State got no closer, however.

Hartley upped the advantage to 27-9 with 3:22 left in the third with a 35-yard field goal.

Peterson then polished off his dazzling outing with a 53-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth.
