Rutgers drops Navy to remain unbeaten

Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Mike Teel threw for 215 yards with three touchdowns and the Rutgers defense held the nation's top-ranked rushing attack in check, as the 24th-ranked Scarlet Knights rolled to a 34-0 victory over Navy.

Teel completed 15-of-26 passes and Ray Rice ran for 93 yards for Rutgers (6-0), which became bowl-eligible for the second straight year and continued its best start since the 1976 team finished 11-0.

Navy (5-2) entered the game averaging 350.5 yards on the ground, but managed only 113 yards on 50 carries against a stingy Rutgers defense. Losing quarterback Brian Hampton to a dislocated left knee in the first quarter didn't help.

Hampton was the leading rusher for the Midshipmen and the key to their option offense, which didn't function well after he left the contest. The game was scoreless when Hampton was carted off the field on a stretcher.

Rutgers went on top midway through the second quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Jeremy Ito, then reached the end zone with 1:17 left in the half when Teel hit Tiquan Underwood with a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Navy had a pair of punts blocked in the third quarter, leading to 10 Rutgers points.

Tim Brown came up with the first block after Navy's first possession of the third quarter and the Scarlet Knights took over at the Middies' 23-yard line. Teel converted the big play into a touchdown, hitting Underwood with a nine- yard scoring pass to make it 17-0.

Glen Lee blocked Navy's next punt inside the 10-yard line, but Rutgers managed only to turn it into a 24-yard field goal by Ito.

The Scarlet Knights started their next possession at the Navy 29 after the Midshipmen came up short on 4th-and-1, but Teel was picked off by Jeremy McGown inside the five-yard line.

Rutgers got the ball right back, however, after a successful Navy punt and Teel directed a 54-yard drive for a touchdown. He capped the series with a 30- yard scoring pass to James Townsend early in the fourth quarter to make it 27-0.

Kordell Young added a three-yard touchdown run late in the fourth to account for the final margin.

Rutgers outgained Navy 339-161.

Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada took over for Hampton and finished with 11 yards on 22 carries. He completed only 2-of-6 passes for 28 yards.

Jarrod Bryant also got some playing time at quarterback for Navy and threw for 20 yards on 2-of-10 passing while running for five yards on three carries.

Game Notes

Reggie Campbell led Navy with 44 yards on nine carries...Underwood had four catches for 64 yards...Rutgers has won five of the last six meetings and evened the all-time series at 10-10-1.
