Chris Nickson threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns for Vanderbilt (3-4, 1-3 SEC), which halted an 11-game series losing streak and beat Georgia for the first time since a 43-30 triumph at Athens in 1994. Nickson also led the Commodores with 59 rushing yards.
Georgia (5-2, 2-2) has lost two in a row -- both at home -- after opening the season with five straight wins. The Bulldogs were coming off a 51-33 rout at the hands of Tennessee last week.
The Commodores watched Georgia score nine straight points in just over a minute early in the fourth quarter to turn a 21-13 deficit into a 22-21 Bulldog lead. Georgia kicker Andy Bailey then missed a 38-yard field goal try with 5:02 remaining that would have forced Vanderbilt to go for a touchdown.
Nickson quickly followed with a 21-yard pass on the second play to ignite Vanderbilt's winning march and added a 14-yard connection with Earl Bennett to convert 3rd-and-5.
The Commodores soon faced 4th-and-5 and Nickson hit Sean Walker with a six- yard pass to keep the drive alive at the Georgia 29. A pair of running plays moved the ball to the 18 with 59 seconds left and time continued to wind down as Vanderbilt centered the ball for Hahnfeldt, who drilled the kick straight through the uprights.
"This is a huge win for us, especially going on the road in the SEC and picking up a win," said Hahnfeldt. "Georgia is a top team, and to win at their Homecoming is big for us and our program."
Not only had Georgia won the last 11 meetings, but each had been decided by double digits. Vandy improved to 18-47-2 in the all-time series.
"The bottom line is they played better than us," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "They made the plays when they needed to. Vanderbilt is a good football team. They've been knocking on the door and finally knocked it in on us."
Vanderbilt had lost its first three SEC games by a combined 12 points, falling 13-10 at Alabama, 21-19 against Arkansas and 17-10 at Ole Miss.
Georgia's two-quarterback rotation didn't produce much offense, as Joe Tereshinski started and completed 11-of-17 passes for 151 yards with a touchdown. Matt Stafford finished 9-of-13 for 86 yards.
The Bulldogs started the second half with a 13-7 lead and had the ball first to open the third quarter, but things quickly began to turn sour when Kregg Lumpkin fumbled on the second play from scrimmage.
Vanderbilt took over at the Georgia 25 and needed just four plays to find the end zone, as Cassen Jackson-Garrison scored on a three-yard run. The extra point put the Commodores ahead 14-13.
Georgia followed with a three and out and Vandy took over at its own 48. Nickson converted a 3rd-and-10 with a 32-yard pass to Bennett and the Commodores eventually moved inside the Georgia five before Tra Battle intercepted a poorly thrown pass in the end zone.
The Vandy defense again forced Georgia into a three and out and the Commodores went back on offense from their own 29 after a punt.
Nickson directed a 71-yard drive for another touchdown, highlighting the six- play series with a 24-yard run and 35-yard scoring pass to Walker for a 21-13 lead with 2:25 left in the third period.
The Bulldogs followed with a long march into Vanderbilt territory, but it came up short of the goal line and Bailey kicked a 19-yard field goal to make it a five-point game early in the fourth quarter.
On the second play after the kickoff, Tony Taylor intercepted a Nickson pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown to put Georgia ahead. The Bulldogs came up short on the two-point conversion attempt and led by just one with 9:22 remaining.
Things continued to go Georgia's way in the fourth quarter when Brett Upson's punt traveled just five yards and went out of bounds at the Vandy 33. The Bulldogs' run of luck ended soon after when Bailey was wide left on a 38-yard field goal try that preceded Vandy's winning march.
"We overcame some adversities today and won the game," remarked Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson. "You have got to battle back from mistakes and we did that today."
Georgia took a 3-0 lead with 10 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 23- yard field goal by Bailey. Tereshinski threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Martrez Milner with 5:11 left in the first half to extend the lead to 10-0.
Alex Washington returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards to midfield and the Vandy offense took advantage. Nickson completed each of his three passes on the six-play drive, the last a 13-yard strike to Bennett for a touchdown with 2:50 left in the opening half.
Georgia had time and runs of 17 and 21 yards by Thomas Brown helped set up a 20-yard field goal by Bailey as time expired, sending the Bulldogs into the break with a 13-7 edge.
Game Notes
Brown finished with 75 yards on 11 carries, but left the contest with a knee injury, while Lumpkin added 48 yards on 11 attempts...Georgia has lost consecutive home games for the first time since the end of the 1995 season and lost on Homecoming for the first time since 1994.
