White, who ran for just four touchdowns in the first five games of the season, scored on runs of 69, 40, 32 and 12 yards. He also threw for 99 yards for the Mountaineers (6-0, 1-0 Big East) in their Big East opener.
Steve Slaton added 163 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for West Virginia, which finished with a whopping 457 rushing yards and outgained Syracuse overall 562-227.
"We did a couple of new things offensively, particularly a couple quarterback runs," said West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez. "We had a quarterback counter we ran, and Pat scored on that same play three times."
Perry Patterson threw a touchdown pass and also ran for a score for the Orange (3-4, 0-2), who have lost their first two conference games of the season and have dropped nine straight Big East tilts. It doesn't get any easier for Syracuse, which hosts nationally-ranked Louisville next Saturday.
Syracuse has been unable to stop the run in the past two weeks, as Pittsburgh rolled up 236 yards on the ground in a 21-11 triumph last week at the Carrier Dome.
The Mountaineers broke open a three-point game at halftime with three scoring runs from White in the third quarter and beat the Orange for the fifth straight time.
West Virginia extended a 17-14 lead on the first possession of the second half. White ran for 19 yards on the first play and added a 20-yard toss to Brandon Myles before capping the five-play series with a 40-yard touchdown run.
Syracuse, which had success moving the ball in the first half, reached the West Virginia 40 on its first possession of the third quarter, but the drive stalled and the Mountaineers took over after a punt.
White was again the key figure in an 80-yard scoring drive. He threw a 12-yard pass to convert an early third down, then ran for 22 yards before completing the seven-play march with a 32-yard touchdown scamper to extend the West Virginia lead to 31-14 with 3:23 to play in the third quarter.
A short Syracuse punt gave the Mountaineers excellent field position at the Orange 35 and White needed only three plays to find the end zone again, finishing the quick series with a 12-yard run in the final minute of the period.
"The counter play worked really well," said White. "The hole was there and I was hitting it. They were keying on [Slaton] and we have not run that play much so it was something new for them and it worked."
A 32-yard field goal by Pat McAfee just over five minutes into the fourth quarter pushed the West Virginia cushion to 41-14.
The Orange finally scored again after a West Virginia turnover, as Patrick Shadle kicked a 34-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.
"They have an explosive offense and an extremely good tailback," said Syracuse head coach Greg Robinson. "I was very impressed with White. He is a fine athlete and a good leader."
Syracuse took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards on 11 plays for a touchdown. Patterson converted a trio of third downs during the series and capped it with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams.
It marked the first time this season that West Virginia trailed in a game, but it didn't last long.
White, on the fourth play after the kickoff, kept the ball on an option and raced 69 yards into the end zone to tie the game.
After a series of punts, the Mountaineers drove 57 yards and took the lead for good on a 25-yard field goal by McAfee with 10:42 left in the second quarter.
The Orange went three and out and West Virginia followed with a quick 83-yard drive for another touchdown. After carries by Slaton, Owen Schmitt and Darius Reynaud totaled 31 yards, Slaton broke free down the right sideline for a 52- yard touchdown run to make it 17-7.
Syracuse responded with a 60-yard drive for a touchdown. Patterson keyed the nine-play series with a 30-yard pass to Williams and finished it himself with a spinning three-yard touchdown run just 2:52 before the break.
The Mountaineers had plenty of time to mount another march and reached the Syracuse 19 in the final minute, but a personal foul penalty pushed them back and White was intercepted in the end zone on the final play of the half.
White threw for just 50 yards in the first half, but ran eight times for 105 yards. Slaton also reached the century mark before the break, rushing 10 times for 101 yards.
Game Notes
White's first touchdown run of 69 yards was the longest play from scrimmage for the Mountaineers this season...West Virginia has scored on its opening drive in each of its last eight games...Syracuse still leads the all-time series 30-24, but hasn't beaten West Virginia since 2001...The Orange haven't won a Big East game since beating then-conference member Boston College in the 2004 regular-season finale.
