Despite being listed as questionable prior to the game, Brohm returned for Louisville after missing the last two games. He injured the thumb on his right throwing hand in the Cardinals' 31-7 victory over Miami on Sept. 16. After undergoing surgery the next day, Brohm was supposed to miss four-to-six weeks, but recovered quickly and returned to practice this past Monday.
Gary Barnidge caught five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown for the Cardinals (6-0, 1-0), who opened Big East Conference play with a victory.
Anthony Allen carried eight times for 25 yards and a touchdown while George Stripling added 27 yards on seven carries.
Dustin Grutza went 10-of-27 for 129 yards and two touchdowns for the Bearcats (3-4, 0-2), and Greg Moore ran for 96 yards on 19 attempts.
The game came down to one final play with nine seconds on the clock after the Bearcats orchestrated one final drive. But, on 4th-and-15 Grutza's pass was nearly intercepted in the end zone and fell incomplete.
Under head coach Bobby Petrino, the Cardinals came into the game off to their best start since 1993 and just one of a handful of undefeated teams.
Both teams lacked an offensive punch early on, particularly in the first quarter.
On the Bearcats first possession, they went three and out. Brian Steel came on to punt but his 51-yard kick was fumbled by Patrick Carter deep in Louisville territory and the ball was recovered by Cincinnati. Four plays later, Kevin Lovell's 23-yard-field goal gave the team a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded with a six-play, 50-yard drive to begin the second quarter. Art Carmody's 32-yard field goal at 13:47 knotted the score at 3-3.
Sparking talk of an upset, Cincinnati extended its lead with 5:55 left in the second. Grutza's eight-yard slant pass to Brent Celek for the score capped a 78-yard, 17 play drive. The Bearcats chewed 7:52 off the game clock and found themselves up 10-3.
The Cardinals went right back down the field on their next possession, but the Bearcats' defense held once again and Louisville settled for a 42-yard field goal by Carmody and a 10-6 lead.
It looked like Cincinnati might head into the break with a four-point advantage but another turnover proved costly as Louisville moved 50 yards on eight plays for a score. With just 54 seconds left on the clock Brohm found Barnidge wide open in the end zone on a one-yard TD pass.
Cincinnati's second possession of the second half started on the Cardinals 38- yard-line, but a dropped pass and delay of game penalty forced a punt. Louisville responded with a quick two-play, 76-yard scoring drive capped off by Allen's 17-yard touchdown run to make it 20-10 with 3:21 left to play in the third quarter.
The Bearcats had a chance to pull within seven to start the fourth quarter, but Lovell hooked a 47-yard field goal attempt wide right.
Carmody nailed a 35-yarder with 6:09 remaining to give the Cardinals a 23-10 edge.
Cincinnati's Derrick Stewart caught an 18-yard TD pass with 4:10 left to make it a six-point contest.
Game Notes The game marked the 45th meeting between the two teams...Louisville has won the last four meetings but Cincinnati leads the all-time series 26-19-1...The Cardinals now have 15 straight home wins, good for the nation's second longest streak...They are 19-1 at home under Petrino...Jeff Brohm, older brother of Brian Brohm, had his jersey retired before the game. He's in his fourth season of coaching at the University.
