The Tigers (6-1, 4-1 SEC) did not score an offense touchdown in the game. Auburn used two defensive scores, a safety and four John Vaughn field goals to take the victory.
"What a game," said Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville. "Good gosh! What a difference a half will make for a defense. I am so proud of our defense for growing up and start making some plays."
Brandon Cox completed 18-of-27 passes for 182 yards for the Tigers, who bounced back after losing to an underrated Arkansas squad at home, 27-10, last week. Brad Lester added 94 yards rushing, while Courtney Taylor had five receptions for 37 yards.
"We came out and played as a team tonight both offensively and defensively," said Lester. "That was something we didn't do last week and you can't win if you don't play as a team."
Chris Leak completed just 9-of-17 passes for 113 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Gators (6-1, 4-1), who lost for the first time in nine games dating back to last season. Percy Harvin had 66 rushing yards on five carries, while Dallas Baker had four receptions for 62 yards and a score.
"We just made a lot of crucial errors," said Florida head coach Urban Meyer. "We needed to stay on schedule with our game plan and we didn't do that tonight."
Down 17-11 at halftime, Auburn went back in front early in the third quarter with a big special teams play. The Tigers blocked Eric Wilbur's punt attempt and Smith took it back nine yards for the score and an 18-17 Auburn advantage.
The two defensive units took over from there. The Gators managed to drive inside the Tigers 10-yard line but the Auburn defense rose up. Quentin Groves sacked Leak and forced a fumble that Tray Blackmon recovered.
Auburn then tried to put the game away but its drive stalled at the Florida 28 and Vaughn's 45-yard field goal attempt was wide left with 3:16 remaining, giving the Gators life.
Leak was not able to take advantage, however. On Florida's first play after the miss, the quarterback threw a wobbler off his back foot and Eric Brock was there to pick it off at the Tigers 46-yard line and return it all the way back to the Gators 28.
After three Lester runs up the middle, Vaughn connected on a 39-yarder with 31 seconds left to make it 21-17.
On the game's last play, as a desperate Florida team tried a hook-and-ladder- play, Patrick Lee picked up the loose ball and rumbled 19-yards to paydirt to account for the final margin.
The two teams found themselves deadlocked at three after the first quarter. Auburn went 13 plays and 85 yards on its opening possession before settling for a 22-yard Vaughn field goal. Florida matched the Tigers with a long march of its own before stalling and getting a 22-yard field goal from Chris Hetland.
Florida then pushed ahead early in the second quarter. Leak capped another long drive by finding Baker for a 15-yard TD pass.
Auburn got back on the scoreboard with a safety when the Gators were flagged for holding in the end zone.
The Tigers kept chipping away when Vaughn nailed a 31-yard field goal with 4:58 left in the half, to make it a 10-8 game.
The Gators responded under the auspices of Freshmen sensation Tim Tebow, just 48 seconds later. Harvin set up the touchdown with back-to-back big plays. First, his 14-yard run was aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty and Harvin then ripped off a 35-yard run down to the Auburn 16. The dynamic Tebow took it the rest of the way to give Florida back some breathing room, 17-8.
Vaughn's third field goal of the half, a 34-yarder with just 29 ticks left, made it a 17-11 contest at intermission.
