Ohio State, USC 1-2 in first BCS Poll
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ohio State and Southern California stand atop of the first Bowl Championship Series standings released on Sunday.The Buckeyes (7-0) have been dominant so far this season, with their latest win a 38-7 throttling of Michigan State on Saturday.
Ohio State becomes the first Big 10 team to sit atop the initial BCS standings.
On the other hand, USC's selection as the second-seed in the BCS comes as a surprise to some. The Trojans (6-0), who lost to Texas in last year's championship game, have appeared less than stellar in narrow victories against Washington State, Washington and Arizona State over the last three weeks.
USC has now been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the BCS standings for 25 straight weeks.
Ohio State has a BCS average of .9731, while USC is next with .9559.
Michigan (7-0) is currently third in the BCS standings with a .9341 average. The Wolverines' last game of the year is against the top-ranked Buckeyes on November 18.
Auburn (6-1) is seeded fourth in the BCS standings average after upsetting Southeastern Conference-foe Florida on Saturday.
West Virginia (6-0), the Gators (6-1), Louisville (6-0), Notre Dame (5-1), Texas (6-1) and California (6-1) fill out the top 10.
The champions from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac-10 and SEC make up six of the eight teams in the four BCS games -- the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta Bowls. The other two spots go to at-large teams.
The BCS system uses a pair of human polls -- the Harris Interactive and the USA Today -- as well as six computer rankings. Each poll counts one-third toward the overall score, while the average of the computers completes the formula.
