Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson completed 16-of-28 passes against Ole Miss last weekend, and he finished with 206 yards en route to two touchdowns and no interceptions. His most important pass of the game came in overtime, as he hooked up with Le'Ron McClain for the game-winning two-yard touchdown. Alabama did a tremendous job of establishing its ground attack in the win, racking up 228 rushing yards while averaging 5.4 ypc. With 434 yards and zero turnovers, Wilson and his offensive teammates clearly did their jobs. Through seven games Alabama is averaging 24.4 ppg and 376.4 total ypg. Kenneth Darby is counted on heavily to carry the load on the ground, and while the tailback has yet to score a touchdown this season, he does have 586 rushing yards to his credit thanks to a recent surge. Wilson, a first-year starter, has completed 59.9 percent of his throws for 1,579 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Keith Brown paces the offense with 37 catches for 513 yards, and DJ Hall is tops in the touchdown department with five.
The Alabama defense was far from dominant against Ole Miss last weekend, as it failed to record a single takeaway and surrendered a 55-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter that forced overtime. Still, the unit deserves credit for limiting the Rebels to a field goal in the extra session, paving the way for Wilson and the offense to score the game-winning touchdown. Opponents are scoring 17.6 ppg against Alabama this season while gaining just 280.6 total ypg. While the Tide failed to force any turnovers last time out, the season total of 17 takeaways is still impressive. Of the 13 touchdowns that Alabama has surrendered, eight have come through the air. Jeffrey Dukes currently leads the defense with 43 total tackles, two more than teammate Juwan Simpson. Surprisingly, the Tide has accumulated a low total of just seven sacks and no player has registered more than two. Simeon Castille and Lionel Mitchell have three interceptions apiece to their credit.
It is no secret that Tennessee suffered through one of its worst seasons in recent memory last year, and quarterback Erik Ainge endured a great deal of criticism for the lousy results. This season the Vols have only one loss and are scoring 35.2 ppg to go along with 421.5 ppg under the direction of Ainge, who is now the subject of praise. The signal-caller has completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,657 yards with 14 touchdowns and only five interceptions, and he is clearly a strong candidate for SEC Player of the Year honors. Ainge has benefited from one of the nation's premier wide receiver duos comprised of Robert Meachem and Jayson Swain. Meachem has made 34 catches for 675 yards and six touchdowns, while Swain has contributed 22 grabs for 378 yards and five scores. As for the ground attack, LaMarcus Coker leads the charge with 381 yards and Montario Hardesty has a team-high four rushing touchdowns. In the most recent game against Georgia two weeks ago, Arian Foster had three one- yard touchdown runs and Ainge added a one-yard scoring plunge of his own. Ainge also threw a pair of touchdowns, one to tight end Bret Smith and another to Meachem. Georgia actually led that game going into the fourth quarter, but Tennessee scored four touchdowns in the final frame, including three on offense.
Give the Tennessee defense a great deal of credit for its effort against Georgia two weeks ago. Sure, the Bulldogs did post 33 points in that contest, but two touchdowns were scored on special teams. There is some room for improvement, of course, as the Vols did permit a pair of 80-yard drives that ended in touchdowns, but the overall effort was solid. Through six outings, opponents are scoring 19.3 ppg while gaining 290.2 total ypg against the impressive Tennessee defensive unit. The Vols are yielding 3.7 ypc on the ground and have posted more interceptions (eight) than passing touchdowns allowed (six). With 11 sacks and 10 takeaways, Tennessee has not made an abundance of impact defensive plays, but the overall effort has been strong. Marvin Mitchell leads the Vols with 56 total tackles and Jerod Mayo is tops with four sacks.
Expect a well-rested Tennessee squad to take care of business on its home field this weekend. The Vols are strong on both sides of the ball and should be able to contain the Alabama offense.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Tennessee 23, Alabama 10
