Ian Johnson was at it again on Sunday night as he rolled up 192 yards and scored four touchdowns in the victory over NMSU. Johnson took the bulk of the carries for the Broncos, who averaged more than six yards per attempt. When the squad was not asking the running backs to carry the load quarterback Jared Zabransky was getting the job done with 14-of-21 passing for 215 yards and a pair of scores as well. While he may be listed seventh in the conference in passing with 183.4 ypg, Zabransky understands his role with the Broncos and plays it rather well. Clearly it is more important for him to direct traffic than to make spectacular plays, and yet he still has 11 touchdowns to go along with the fewest interceptions of any starter in the WAC (three). Johnson continues to be the horse for the Broncos, leading the league and placing sixth in the nation with 142.6 ypg on the ground. Among running backs he has twice as many touchdowns (14) as any other player at the position entering this week. The quick-scoring offense for the Broncos is second in the WAC with an average of 39.4 ppg, which places them sixth in the nation as well.
Boise State entered action last weekend with one of the better run defenses in the conference and the nation, but by holding the Aggies to a mere eight yards on 20 attempts the Broncos came out looking even better. However, everyone knows that New Mexico State is a passing team first and foremost, which is why it should not come as a surprise that BSU allowed 526 yards through the air. Considering NMSU's Chase Holbrook set another school record with 49 completions in the outing, the high yardage total should have been expected. Korey Hall and Mardy Tadman were at it again for the Broncos, with each recording interceptions and Hall leading the unit with 15 tackles on the night. With his 71 tackles after seven games, Hall is blowing away the rest of his teammates in that department, not to mention leading the unit with four interceptions and placing second with four tackles for loss. To say that Hall is all over the field would be an understatement these days. But because of his efforts Boise State has the top run defense in the conference, allowing just 77.9 ypg (10th nationally) and has surrendered a mere eight passing touchdowns (tied for fewest in the WAC) while picking off the most interceptions (13).
Perhaps the most important aspect of the Idaho offense last week against the Bulldogs was the fact that the Vandals controlled the ball for an unheard of 13:03 in the fourth quarter alone, keeping LaTech from ever having a chance of mounting a legitimate comeback attempt. Jayson Bird may have averaged just two and a half yards per carry, but he still made it into the end zone twice for the Vandals, while Steve Wichman connected on 14-of-27 passing for 238 yards and an interception. Max Komar was one of six receivers to come up with a pair of receptions for the Vandals, but he was the one who made the most of his limited opportunities with 101 yards. Bird leads the team in rushing after seven games with 350 yards and five touchdowns, but when he's not getting the job done Brian Flowers has filled in and not missed a beat with his 342 yards and four scores. Wichman is still adjusting somewhat to the fast pace of WAC play, which might be the reason behind his four touchdowns and eight interceptions so far in 2006. Idaho is currently seventh in the conference in scoring with 21 ppg, stemming from the group being seventh in total offense with 332.9 ypg.
With just one win in six chances so far this season, it is obvious that Louisiana Tech is a team on the decline, and still the effort that the Vandals put forth on defense was still beyond impressive. Idaho not only picked off four passes but also recovered four fumbles, making it almost impossible for the Bulldogs to make any serious runs for contention. Stanley Franks recorded one of those picks for the Vandals, his sixth in the last five games to place him among the nation's leaders in that department. Josh Bousman finished with only four tackles, but his two fumble recoveries made him that much more important to the Vandals who are off to a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time since 1999. Having to face opponents that coach Erickson was formerly associated with early in the season (Washington State and Oregon State) has skewed the stats for the Vandals towards the negative, but the group is slowly evening out although there is still a long way to go. During this current win streak the Vandals have not allowed more than three touchdowns, and yet the scoring defense still shows that the group is giving up 28.6 ppg to rank 95th in the nation. Trying to bring that number down is David Vobora who ranks second in the conference and fourth in the nation with an average of 11.7 tackles per game.
Idaho has certainly shown some spunk over the last month or so, but to expect the Vandals to be ready for what Boise State brings to the table is asking a lot of the young group. This will be a spirited meeting that should bring out a big crowd in Moscow, but expect there to be just as many Boise fans cheering their team on to victory.
